There are people whose minds are sharp at 70 or 75. It’s not an issue you deal with via blanket policy, but with honest, case-by-case scrutiny of a candidate’s faculties. Case in point: Fetterman would not be filtered out by this rule, but he’s no less medically unfit to serve.

Mikhail Gorbaechev@mikhailgorbaechev.bsky.social · 3d agoThe thing about Gillibrand is that she was always kind of an ambitious fake who took enormous political damage from the only principled thing she ever did (merc Franken), watched her dreams go up in smoke in the 2020 primary, and then got stuck inside during COVID like everyone else.
I’m not excusing Jonah Hill’s bad behavior, but as someone with direct knowledge of what it was like to be a fat young man in the early 2000s, I suspect being a fat young man in the public eye during that time was an extremely special hell with unique and permanent effects.

I meet with MAHA activists because a lot of their concerns are bipartisan issues that major corporations paint as partisan. The fight isn't left and right, it's top and bottom.
I’m not sure you could name a more ardent Trump loyalist than Pirro since 2016 outside of Miller and this is happening despite her pulling absolutely zero punches in prosecuting people he’s told her to punish. Not a great sign of his grasp on reality imo.

I would note that the trauma, which I don’t deny was real, also had a relatively short public half-life. When Kirk is mentioned now, it’s almost as a tack-on to whatever fresh outrage the right is currently stoking. It’s a consequence of their glibness re: the expendability of human life.

To the right-wing media, though, the fact one of their own could get cut down like this was a genuine trauma.
I can’t get my head around the argument that Mamdani’s win was less meaningful because of the margin. It was a three way race! With one of his opponents spending more to beat him than many campaigns do on senatorial races!

This isn’t how adults make important decisions, but go off.
The near daily meta-discourse around one too-online person and his too-online harassers helps perpetuate and escalate that dynamic and everyone should stop participating in it.
One personal effect of the Trump era is how little empathy I have for people like this, who are members of vulnerable groups themselves but who dedicate their lives to hurting other vulnerable people. I see this and I don’t think “That poor guy.” I think “Good. One less fascist.” It’s not great!

He seemed genuinely happy in the old photos. I sincerely hope he can find his way back to that joy (and ditch the rest of the hate along the way).

I’d go a step further and say that Vance believes he can both mold and outmaneuver the right-wing movements that have brought him to power and that he won’t know he’s unable to control of their most violent and bigoted elements until it’s far too late.

Diplomacy is not failing in Iran because of Rubio and Kushner and so forth. It is failing because the war happened at all, and Iran is in a position to inflict pain so the West never touches it again.
I don’t care if the Republican voters of Kentucky are fully represented in the Senate because I know that Kentucky Democrats already aren’t. That’s not a political game, that’s protecting political interests from our political enemies.
