"The Guy from Irish TV" at NASA for 50 years (and counting)! Ex Foreign Hack at BBC News & RTE News; now see/hear me live on space on BBC, RTE, Newstalk FM @aljazeera.com etc

Earlier today, the discarded upper stage of a Falcon 9 rocket impacted on the Moon. As part of a coordinated observing campaign, our Very Large Telescope detected spectral lines of sodium and lithium gas in the impact plume lasting for 5-10 minutes after impact. 🔭 🧪 📷 ESO/C. Schmidt et al. 1/4

I am astonished and delighted that the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are still active! My report from San Francisco in 1980 @news.rte.ie , when they first emerged, caused some outrage in Ireland 😂. They were the first Pussy Riot - using shock tactics to make a society face the horror of AIDS.

If you are in Venezuela and are safe you can assist scientists in understanding the cause of the earthquake and future risk by reporting what you felt. Felt reports are crucial information for understanding faults and risk. earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/...

Another reason to be on BlueSky. Thank you for a wonderful creation story, from the "Bible" of the Chukchi of Siberia - the people who settled the Americas. Every astronaut who ever flew on the ISS knows their native Kamchatka. Another reason to be awed by that view. (ALT for source)

The Chukchi creation myth tells that the first bird Raven flew through a great expanse and created landmasses, but the world was dark. He asked the other birds for help and only the tiny snow bunting could peck a hole in the sky large enough for the Sun to emerge. #SkyhorseCarousel

View of the whole panel showing. The previously shown border designs frame a center section of the panel with a white bird pecking at a brown background, with rays of light in yellow hues seeming to burst forth.

I prefer the original 😉. (Oddly, Baltimore MD is *not* named after the original Baltimore, but from an obscure country house in County Leitrim at the other end of the country. The absentee-landlord owners – who probably never even came to Ireland – "founded" Baltimore MD)

Today I went to the Ivy Bookshop Pop-up in the old Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church. It’s has really cool interactive displays encouraging you to share your local recommendations according to the dipslay theme. I’ll use this book for adventures once I’m done with all the bookstores.

The book Secret Baltimore: A guide to the Weird, Wonderful and Obscure by Rvan Valkan with an Ivy Bookshop bookmark sticking out of it
