That said, let us take a moment to thank our Bluesky Trans and Furry Elders for freaking out Jack Dorsey so much he bolted and left us this nice social media playground, taking most of his crypto chuds with him. We thank you for your service.

"The whole world was filled with tobacco smoke" is one of those uncomfortable and horrifying truths that we often forget when looking back in nostalgia. I also came in at tail end of the leaded gas phase out. "The air was full of toxic levels of smoke and lead" isn't a fun thing to reminisce about

'You'll choke too' - an aerial embroidery landscape inspired by all the wildfires happening right now... I'm upset every time I smell smoke outside and somehow we have people starting them maliciously too! But we all breathe the same air so they'll choke too (1/2 - see thread for close-ups)

An embroidery hoop containing a sewn landscape from above. It shows a forest on the right, a line of fire and charred ground with smoke on the left. The smoke is felted wool.

Fae: “Tell us your true name.” Me: “…Just my name? No birthdate, no SSN, no fingerprint scan, no address, no mother’s maiden name? Are you sure you’ve even got the right Olivia Waite? There’s like six.” Fae: “What the hell kind of bargains have you been making?” Me: “They call it health insurance.”

I did a paper that considered the response to the 1918 pandemic right as Covid was getting going and we...decided largely to pretend it never happened and with it and the end of the war we went "well that's it, back to normal" then everyone spent the 1920s going insane. bsky.app/profile/erik...

It continues to fuck me up that we stay thinking about 9/11 but want to memory hole Covid so bad we're destroying the entire concept of public health in the US.

In the United States, there have been 103,436,829[3] confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 1,238,563[3] confirmed deaths, the most of any country, and the 17th highest per capita worldwide.[43] The COVID-19 pandemic ranks as the deadliest disaster in the country's history.[44] It was the third-leading cause of death in the U.S. in 2020, behind heart disease and cancer.[45] From 2019 to 2020, U.S. life expectancy dropped by three years for Hispanic and Latino Americans, 2.9 years for African Americans, and 1.2 years for White Americans.[46] In 2021, U.S. deaths due to COVID-19 rose,[47] and life expectancy fell.[48]

A very good read. In a vaguely related note: one of the things I truly enjoyed the most from watching Ride or Die was how Octavia Spencer, one of the few plus sized celebrities who hasn't drastically lost weight lately, was portrayed as desirable. It was shockingly refreshing.

Okay, let's do it. Here's why we can(not) talk about Ariana Grande. gossip-reading-club.ghost.io/why-we-can-n...

Every time the legacy media tries to whip up some suburb-coded bullshit about Mayor Wilson she should pedestrianize another block. Whenever they get really over-the-top: whoops here's a superblock

Disagree w/Wilson from the left on stuff like surveillance cams but know that she is as progressive as we're gonna get in a citywide position & every day she doesn't do the stupid do-nothing status quo shit Harrell did as effortlessly as breathing is a win for the city. Let her cook, fuck the haters

It couldn't be clearer what's happening with local legacy media trashing Mayor Wilson: the reactionary centrist majority is about to melt away & they're trying to bake in a narrative that she has fucked up in some catastrophic--but also indefinable--way, to hamstring the coming progressive majority
