whoo this sentence really jumped out <<In one case, The Washington Post ran a front page story advertising the location for white servicemen to meet and carry out further attacks on black people in the city.>>

I think today's liberals in the US are used to a social environment where pogroms are rare and don't realize the role armed self defense plays in that state of affairs www.history.com/articles/red...

I generally prefer more concrete demands in my political messaging, but for immigration policy we genuinely do need culture war (positive). Decades of tolerating media that shows migrants and drugs as a valid source of criminal danger, on broadcast television, it’s rancid and accepted.

The average America is just totally, completely wrong about immigration, thanks to a combination of a lack of education and a deluge of right-wing propaganda for which the left has never had a remotely satisfactory answer. The standard normie response of "Just come legally!" is utterly unrealistic.

The reason so few ostensibly progressive people are actually for open borders is because if they erase the arbitrary line on the map they'd have to reckon with the fact that the wealth with which they plan to build their utopia is unjustly hoarded by 10% of the world's population from the other 90%

Something I think about a lot is how western liberals were writing screeds on the inherently slavish Russian mind when Russian civilians didn't stop the war their government launched and then when it was their turn far, far fewer of them ended up imprisoned for opposing the war than did Russians

US Central Command (CENTCOM) has prepared a large-scale operation in the form of a decisive two-week bombing campaign should Trump choose escalation to break the deadlock in the Middle East, two sources confirmed.-NYP

after watching the odyssey i think emily wilson straight up just did not watch that movie-- i cannot imagine a person coming out of that and thinking 'you know what would make this commentary on male sexual violence and imperialism better? if odysseus fucked circe'. it boggles the mind

I wrote a comedy textbook about Native American history, people and culture! It's called “We’ve Been Here The Whole Time! A Not So Sacred Guide to All Things Native America.” It’s like if The Daily Show or The Onion wrote a book about Indian Country.

Wikimedia Waits Until After Its Massive Conference to Say It Won’t Voluntarily Recognize Union

A supermajority of Wikimedia Foundation workers say they have signed union cards, but the foundation is insisting on an election.

Their anonymous agents, much like ICE today, stamped out dissent across the country, anything deemed “un-American.” They kicked in doors, conducted warrantless searches, kidnapped and interrogated suspects, intimidated and tortured. They particularly targeted immigrants. Sound familiar?

An American Protective League badge, From my collection. From 1917. Note they refer to themselves as "Secret Service." They were not, and the REAL Secret Service objected. It was intended to be confusing, since the APL had no legal authority to conduct its activities. The APL later dropped the designation.

a wasted opportunity in legend of korra would have been to have this precise conflict come up-- the era of modernization was precisely when you saw people contemplating new alphabets, simplifying characters, etc.-- but this would require the showrunners to perhaps read a history book, so impossible

Henry Ward Beecher was a New England reverend who shipped Sharps rifles to abolitionists in crates thought to carry Bibles. He believed that while the truth shall set you free, the truth & a breech-loading rifle was even better. Harriet Beecher Stowe of Uncle Tom's Cabin fame was a relative...

i still think one of the worst things that could have happened was the biden interregnum as opposed to trump just having two straight terms of four years-- completely took the wind out of the sails of the opposition and let a whole bunch of top Dems hunker down instead of getting kicked out

pretty close to objectively true that Trump I being fractionally less offensively stupid than imagined in the first 2 years blunted a lot of the momentum against him

every day i think of the french government-run minitel system and what different kinds of internets we might have had if we hadn't created it in the era of run-away capitalism and neoliberalism. feels like the internet was doomed to this from the start.

It's very rarely acknowledged by the "what about Sudan?" crowd that has negatively polarized itself so thoroughly against pro-Palestinian sentiment, but basically all of the most pro-Israel think tanks are also extremely pro UAE and GCC writ large. There's a reason for that.
