I will be opening my research group at the Max Delbrück Center later this year to unravel the principles governing the unique context sensing capacity of the liver www.mdc-berlin.de/schwayer and am looking for enthusiastic PhD applicants.

The mammalian liver possesses a regenerative capacity that is unmatched by any other organ. Following injury, liver epithelial cells can proliferate or even change their identity, enabling the organ t...

This epic paper, which has been a heroic 10 year journey for the lead author, Ricardo Barrientos, is finally out in Cell today! Many thanks to all co-authors, especially Billie Meadowcroft and Andela Saric for their beautiful MD simulations www.cell.com/cell/fulltex...

Basement membrane turnover controls cell shape

Basement membranes are scaffolds of proteins, like collagen, that give organs shape. During development, basement membranes must adapt to the growing organ. We infer how fast the basement membrane ada...

Latest work from the team driven by our fantastic post-doc Maribel Arjona. Using cytoplasm extract fractions and active rheology, we adress how endomembranes, that pack the cell interior, influence the mechanics of the cytoplasm! @ijmonod.bsky.social @cnrsbiologie.bsky.social

Just approved an order for standard lab consumables. Prices have nearly doubled since starting the lab. Meanwhile, the bar for publishing keeps rising, requiring ever more costly experiments, while grant budgets barely changed. Hard to see how this is a sustainable trajectory for academic research.

Thanks Focal Plane for the invitation to share not only some images but also the scientific motivations behind this crazy project.

Bringing together science & art, @manuelthery.bsky.social & the CytoMorpho lab describe their project on how cells adapt their shape to their environment using the Musée d’Orsay as their template! The full performance was presented over two nights at the museum earlier this year. #sciart #cellbio

Annual killifish continue to surprise us: they make neutrophils before almost every other cell type, even before gastrulation. Neutrophils usually arise from the lateral plate mesoderm (forming in cyan), but in killifish they are already patrolling around the embryo in gold. tinyurl.com/killiphil
