39 consecutive days without measurable rainfall (<0.2 mm of rain) here in Herne Bay as of today - the local record (back to 1961) is 44 days from 13th April to 26th May 2011. For summer, it's 43 days from 8th June to 20th July 2018. The record could very well go.

One thing to mention here, and why we are transitioning to use the relative index RONI, is because the oceans are warming so fast it’s much easier to reach these huge anomalies these days. This shows the warming in the ENSO 3.4 region. Thanks Brian McNoldy for the graph. @bmcnoldy.bsky.social
*2026 El Niño Ahead by a Mile* It’s remarkable for us scientists to witness El Niño’s evolution. If you had asked us if something like this was possible a year ago, it would have been a definitive no. But here we are… already more than 1C (& 3 months) ahead of the next strongest episode in 1997… 1/
AUSTRIA also had its hottest night in history MIN 28.5 Homstein Absolutely insane, Europe has never seen anything like this.
‼️ABSOLUTELY CRAZY 41.2C IN AUSTRIA ALL TIME NATIONAL RECORD BROKEN AGAIN And again 10 stations >40C And again Hundreds of record smashed Bad Deutsch, the first Austrian station to rise to 40C in 2013,has just taken the national record back. 40C seems routine now in Austria.
The rise in Niño 3.4 region sea surface temperatures over the past few weeks has been nothing short of astonishing. We are now hotter than any days during the 1997/1998 super El Niño event, and we are still many months from the peak.

Dangerous and extreme heat will persist across the Southwest U.S. through tomorrow, before slowly migrating eastward across the central Plains and southeastern U.S. by this weekend. Monsoonal showers will help bring some relief from extreme temperatures across portions of the Desert Southwest.

ARCTIC RECORD WARMTH The world's Northernmost places above 80N had exceptional temperatures up to +17C (Station Nord,Greenland). Absolutely exceptional the MINIMUM of +12.7C at Clyde,CANADA :It shattered by huge margin its all time High Minimum record.
It was the hottest July on record for mean temperature and mean maximum temperature in Reading since records began in 1908. By mean temperature, it is also the hottest month on record since 1908. Extraordinarily sunny too, with just over 358 hours recorded.
Many parts of southern England recorded 0mm of rainfall in July, a first since records began in 1871. No sign of meaningful rainfall in the next 2 weeks either as high pressure re-builds, the drought continues. 📷 Blackheath, London

Austria has set a new all time temperature record of 41.0°C today. 9 separate weather stations recorded >40°C as heatwaves & record temperatures continue to impact the Northern Hemisphere.
This session was, as always, recorded and is now available for viewing via the same link below! I will have at least three other wildfire and El Niño-focused live events over the next week in different venues (see my other posts for details).
At 1pm PT on Mon, Aug 3, I'll have a live update on the historic wildfire disaster that unfolded over the weekend in Spokane, Washington, including causes and context, then discuss the very active wildfire conditions currently present elsewhere in West.
More than 600 (likely homes) burned in and around Spokane County yesterday. The devastation is incomprehensible www.spokesman.com/stories/2026...

The Old Trails wildfire in northwest Spokane destroyed 640 structures Saturday, according to Cody Rohrbach, Spokane County Fire District 3 fire chief.

Another El Niño Record! Watch as heat back ups at the end. The heat building below the surface, which fuels El Niño, is higher than ever measured. This shows the heat just below the Trop Pacific sfc, moving from the W.Pacific Warm Pool where it’s stored, to the E. Pacific Sfc where El Niño forms 1/
See 2026 on right? It’s the hottest the El Niño subsurface has ever been measured. If we are being honest, we have to do serious research into how excess heat due to climate change (90% stored in Ocean) likely fuels stronger El Nino’s. To no one’s surprise, stored heat is coming back to haunt us!

To je nov absolutni rekord najvišje najnižje dnevne temperature. Prejšnji rekord, 27,4 °C, smo dvakrat izmerili na postaji Koper Markovec - 19. julija in 26. avgusta 2024. 🧵2/4
The wildfires in the Pacific NW are incredibly sad and devastating. We have to face the fact that a warming climate is unsustainable. As you can see, fires in the Pacific NW are getting much larger in recent decades. The largest fires (100K acres+) have increased by 10-15X since the 1980s. 1/
Seven of the top-10 costliest wildfire disasters in the EM-DAT database have occurred since 2016. I've omitted EM-DAT's $11 billion estimate for the "nationwide" wildfires in Canada in 1989, since it isn't for a specific location/wildfire.
