Been thinking on the use of GenAi for mood boards. Ethics and legal risks aside, I truly believe using GenAi as references deprives one of many pivotal things. Here’s a blurb on what I mean:

Some thoughts:
When using GenAi as a mood board you don't get sources. This means you deprive yourself from knowledge.
You generated a location? You deprived yourself of knowing more about the interesting parts of the world and why things came to be.
Generate an armor or costume? You deprived yourself on real world techniques, function, form and history.
You generated art inspirations? You deprive yourself of learning about artists from history or lock out living ones from potentially being hired.
Ethical issues of using GenAi models aside, one ends up making visuals mood boards devoid of reality and history. With it one deprives themselves from learning about our world and who is living in it, inadvertently making your work weaker, because of how detached it is from our shared human reality and history.

So tired of this shit. Literally any concept artist can doodle up a better solution in minutes. And you know it’s original and not just plucked from some other IP. And they can iterate on it in realtime, allowing the whole team to be in on the process. We had this process for fucking decades.

We asked the Crystal Dynamics team about its use of generative AI in developing Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. Here’s what Jeff Adams, experience director on the game, had to say.

Any time a creative turns to this tech, they are saying "I do not respect the people who do this thing. I do not value their creative contribution to my vision. I think they are so worthless, they can be replaced by the machine that ate their work." It's not surprising this is seen as hostile.

1/3 - Gutierrez got back to us to explain more clearly his involvement with the project, and how he plans to use the tech: "It’s a big experiment for me, and I will be as cautious as possible with AI. Artists driving tech, and not the other way around, is my goal..."

CA’s transparency bill AB-412 (which forces GenAi companies to disclose if their datasets are using YOUR copyrighted works) is in a slow march to become a bill. Also due to massive tech opposition, they make us all work for it every step of the way. Don’t let em win, sign the petition below asap!👇

Every single day without transparency, the value of copyright loses ground and the harms inflicted to creative industries grow. Please add your signature to this petition TODAY. actionnetwork.org/petitions/le...

If you gotta use genAI and LLMs for projects in your personal and professional life, that just means you don't take craft or creative labour seriously enough. And your projects? Along with the rest of the folks in the rat race doing the same thing you are? What're you even doin here.

Towerborne Art Blast! I was the Environment Lead at Stoic for almost 5 years. Working on this game with the environment crew has truly been a career highlight for me. Images are from the rare opportunities I got to contribute, alongside leading all of the incredible artists listed below!

Twisted fungal roots and plants frame a distant windmill tower.A beach cave opens up to an idyllic cove with shipwreck debris. Islands and a windmill tower are framed in the distance. An icy rock cave opening frames a windmill tower in the distance just past a glacier fed lake.A destroyed canal city scene with a windmill tower in the distance surrounded by storm clouds.

Towerborne is out! I spent the last 4 years on this project. I feel very fortunate to have been part of such an amazing Env Team, we made some really cool stuff! Unfortunately most of us are now also looking for work =/ Anyway, I want to share my first ever Lighting Demo Reel! vimeo.com/1154964572
