Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency counted 61 shrine and temple fires in 2019 and 58 in 2024. That works out to roughly five a month; 2024 was the quietest year. There's no spike in fires, and only one current case is suspected arson.

"YS" is the abbreviation for the Yusouki Sekkei kyoukai (Transport Aircraft Design Association). The "11" was assigned because the 1st proposed designs for both the engine and the main wing area were adopted; therefore, it is officially pronounced "Ichi-Ichi" (One-One) rather than "Eleven."

Walk a narrow street anywhere in Kansai and you'll pass them without noticing: knee-high stones set at the corners of buildings. They might be the most misread street furniture in the region. They're called ikezu-ishi, "rude stones," and the name has done them dirty.
On this day in 1883 the volcano Krakatoa destroys itself in a series of four explosions that create a series of tsunamis in the Sunda Strait of what was then the Dutch East Indies. The explosion is heard on the Island of Rodriguez, over three thousand miles away. Over 36,000 people are killed.

The Japanese also snagged the best brewery in the entire Western Pacific (founded in 1903 as the Germania-Brauerei Tsingtao Co., Ltd.), which is now the second largest brewery in the People's Republic.
