I don't think people are ready for this kind of joke yet.

Queer local policy geek in Brooklyn. Gets unreasonably excited about things like nonprofit procurement reform and loves community-building at all levels. Negative 2 dexterity modifier. Works at CUNY ISLG (but all opinions here are my own!).
I worked for New York’s largest medical center at the start of the pandemic. There were morgue trucks on the streets. They set up emergency medical tents in Central Park. Healthcare worker colleagues died. It is horrific that RFK Jr is on national TV lying that ICUs were empty.
ICE activity in NYC has increased significantly in recent weeks – and with Trump’s TPS cancellations, we fear they may ramp up detentions of Haitian New Yorkers in the coming days. (1/3)
This stolen money needs to be returned to blue states by the next administration with interest.
“Trump has rejected disaster aid for Democratic-run states at the highest rate in the 47-year history of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.” Right now people in blue states are basically paying federal taxes as if they’re colonized territories of red states. www.politico.com/news/2026/03...
One of the great People’s Scholars, and writer of the definitive book on the Young Lords. Her class on race and empire (offered for free with a radical bookstore) introduced me to thinkers who changed how I saw the world. What a devastating loss
"Dr. Johanna Fernández, the Dominican American historian, prison abolitionist, and movement scholar, died on July 30, 2026, after a years-long struggle with non-small cell lung cancer. She was 55."
El Sayed: "When it comes to trans rights, this is the right to get the health care that you need...It’s the right not to be discriminated against by your government because of who you are. Because what tends to happen is they come for theirs, then they come for yours"
looking at the headlines and reflecting once again on how all the smart, hard-working, honest people I know feel like they’re going at least a little insane in our era of total Stupid Immoral Asshole ascendancy
It's been a great first year of the Civic Engagement Fellowship at @cunyislg.bsky.social -- thrilled to be working with these wonderful CUNY alumni and community-based organizations! islg.cuny.edu/blog/after-o...

Reading about AIDS denialism for the show and it's wild how much these features align with the tactics of the anti-trans "reasonable concerns" brigade. web.archive.org/web/20060615...
My Haitian friend was just fired from his job. "They said I don't have a legal status now." This is likely happening to hundreds of thousands of people across this country today. Sick.
It is bad news when a perfectly reasonable, well-established pretrial diversion program is being cut by "moderate Democrats," the same people who are all "we cannot abolish ICE" www.washingtonpost.com/national-sec...
A fight over a San Francisco nonprofit tests how far Democrats will move on crime
The fate of SF Pretrial, a group that runs diversion programs, reflects the tough-on-crime sentiment emerging even in liberal cities.

"(regardless of our military support)" is a hilarious thing to just toss in there as a parenthetical. Like, no, you've identified why it is our problem.

Sociology as a discipline offers people a set of useful lenses for thinking about how people make meaning in the world. Therefore the discipline will continue to exist, regardless of what the reactionaries say or do.
This statement from Speaker Menin reads like a commitment to endless bureaucracy and inaction. We need a City government that is capable of actually delivering positive results for NYC, and my first read of the COGE proposals is that they are a step in the right direction.
A spokesperson for Council Speaker Julie Menin says the body is "concerned by the speed and process through which" Mayor Zohran Mamdani's Charter Revision Commission has advanced five ballot questions for November, warning of "unintended consequences."
Cars and trucks are killing New Yorkers. This is a public health crisis in our city. Let's look at the facts:
Healthcare affordability—especially for our aging populations—is a major issue for policymakers. Immigrants play a bigger role in stabilizing costs that than you might think. Learn more: islg.cuny.edu/resources/gl...
Great to see longtime friend of LID Jared Trujillo selected for the Mayor's Advisory Committee on the Judiciary! Jared is a leader in LGBTQ+ advocacy in NYC and we know he'll bring that same commitment to justice and dignity for all to this role! www.nyc.gov/mayors-offic...

Very good and informative statement right here. bsky.app/profile/rein...
Reinvent Albany Statement and Positions on NYC COGE Proposed Ballot Questions:
With Trump decimating the SNAP program, Mamdani creating subsidized grocery stores seems like a policy more local government should create. Call it socialism all you want, people need to eat.
1️⃣ Note that most of these locations are library branches; imagine how much more public infrastructure they could provide ✨if funded with ≥0.5% of NYC's budget✨ (Another reason @nycplan.org's work is so important) 2️⃣ May this climate-catastrophic event also remind us: COVID is dangerous + not over. 😷
Free KN95 masks will continue to be available at hundreds of locations citywide: on.nyc.gov/freemask. For air quality guidance, visit on.nyc.gov/firesmoke.
We are ecstatic join our partners in the Brooklyn Can't Wait coalition to support longtime LID member, party reformer, Brooklyn community leader, and all-around great guy @juliopenabk.com for the next Brooklyn Democratic Party Chair! Julio is exactly the leader our party needs right now!
Brooklyn is going to have a new Democratic Party. The Brooklyn Can’t Wait coalition of 22 incoming District Leaders have voted to nominate and elect District Leader @juliopenabk.com as Brooklyn Democratic Party Chair this coming September. 1/x
So excited about this! @juliopenabk.com is an exemplary community advocate, a wonderful person, and exactly the leader the Brooklyn Democratic Party needs to transform it into the progressive, transparent, and effective organization it has the potential to be.
It’s a new day for the Brooklyn Democratic Party. Ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work ✊🏽 www.thecityreporter.nyc/2026/07/17/b...
Is it "segregate and eliminate trans people but in a respectful way"? [checks article] Yes. Yes, it is.
“I am more than a little queasy making these suggestions, but I think the Democratic Party needs to perform a kind of brutal surgery on itself,” Thomas Edsall writes about three planks he believes should be added to the Democrats’ platform.
it’s hard to explain how much shit like this has radicalized people. like i’m a white middle-aged broad who’s always been liberal but i’ve gone full-on “abolish ICE/reform scotus/the next dem candidate must commit to mass prosecutions” and you will not sway me from that position.
WHOA DHS does not say that the agent feared for his life… just the vague concern for “public safety.” So he killed him just because he did not want him in America, not because of any specific threat to agents?
This morning in Biddeford, Maine, a 26-year-old man said goodbye to his wife and daughter and left for work. Moments later he was dead, shot in the head by ICE agents, the second man ICE has killed in six days. ICE is killing our neighbors. ICE cannot be reformed. Abolish ICE.
really think that if democrats hold any chamber of congress next year that a condition of passing a budget is the removal of russ vought, who has a genuinely tyrannical vision of presidential power and is a focal point of the lawlessness of the trump administration
I don’t think people really understand how bad the OMB proposed rule is going to be for state and local govt. We’re talking about putting a full third of state budgets under the explicit control of Russ Vought. (1/2) www.bondbuyer.com/news/cities-...

Thrilled to see @mayor.nyc.gov focusing on expanding bus infrastructure and increasing bus speeds all over NYC. Buses play a critical role in our transit system and are a lifeline for so many New Yorkers. Bus riders deserve a transportation infrastructure that prioritizes speedy, reliable bus trips!
