Wonderful to see so many @mblscience.bsky.social Woods Hole Zebrafish Course friends here in Vienna for #EZM2026 - from student alumni, current & former faculty to TAs. As @cohouart.bsky.social put it, a truly cross-generational 'historical' picture (and a few were even missing in the pic....).

Exploring the mysteries of how life starts - from fertilization to dormancy; combining in vivo & in vitro (fish, mouse, cell culture, biochem); privileged to work with an amazing team @IMP! https://paulilab.org/ https://www.imp.ac.at/groups/andrea-pauli/
The #EZM2026 (European Zebrafish Society @ezsociety.bsky.social meeting) is in full swing! More than 500 (not only zebra-)fish researchers from all over the world gather here in Vienna for the next 5 days to discuss science, exchange ideas and make new connections. #Fish #Zebrafish #Friends
Thanks for visiting us Claudia @kellervalsecchi.bsky.social and sharing your creative and out-of-the-box science with us!
I had a fantastic time @imbavienna.bsky.social @viennabiocenter.bsky.social @impvienna.bsky.social Thanks for the invite @pauligroup.bsky.social 🙂 and see you next time!

Now published! We investigated how polyadenylated RNAs are targeted for decay in the human nucleus. www.nature.com/articles/s41... (1/5)
Do you know an outstanding aquarist? We're hiring a Senior Aquarist to help run our cephalopod facility at Columbia University. Our team maintains a colony of 250+ cuttlefish, develops new husbandry techniques (inc transgenics) & studies cuttlefish camouflage and social behavior. 1/3 [Pls repost!]
New preprint by my former colleagues in the Pauli lab 🫶 When I first joined the lab, I naively thought Bouncer’s interacting partner was a single protein. Years later, it turns out that at least 7 components on the sperm side may mediate fertilization - meet the SPARK complex! ✨
New insights into #fertilization from the @pauligroup.bsky.social & Ikawa labs! In a tour-de-force study, we discovered ✨ SPARK ✨, a conserved sperm fertilization complex that couples sperm-egg binding to membrane fusion. Read on 🧵👇 and check out our preprint for more details! tinyurl.com/34cm4xat

How do sperm and egg fuse? Surprisingly, we still don’t fully know… Our field has uncovered many pieces of the fertilization puzzle, but not how they fit together. We identify ✨ SPARK ✨ - a conserved sperm complex that couples sperm-egg binding to fusion. tinyurl.com/34cm4xat Read on! 🧵👇
Now out @natbiotech.nature.com ! Do lncRNAs commonly bind 1000s of genomic sites? Maybe they do, but the dozens of studies that report genomic binding maps of lncRNAs are deeply flawed, with probes binding suprious DNA sites rather than RNA-bound ones.
A preprint‼️that's bound to ruffle some 🪶 "Widespread DNA off-targeting confounds studies of RNA chromatin occupancy" led by our Micah Goldrich and Louis Delhaye from Pieter Mestdagh in Ghent. TL;DR we show that many of lncRNA chromatin occupancy obtained are flawed www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
Excited to share our work uncovering SNOR, a ribosome-associated factor that promotes translation restart after dormancy published in Nature!! This was, as usual, a wonderful collaborative effort between our group and the Mattei Lab @simonemattei.bsky.social @embl.org www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Join us at our special anniversary Symposium on RNA biology at the @vbcscitraining.bsky.social campus! We promise 3 days of interesting science, discussions and hopefully new ideas and learnings for everyone - plus a symposium dinner at the Vienna city hall!
📣 Registration is open for the 20th Microsymposium on RNA Biology! Join in at the Vienna BioCenter for three days of cutting-edge science, discussion & networking. 📅 17-19 June 2026 🧬 Poster abstract deadline: 19 May Info & registration: www.oeaw.ac.at/imba/seminar...
Using light-activated CRISPR in zebrafish, we triggered synchronized DNA breaks and track the repair process. ⚡🐟⚡ Well ... DNA repair is very different in embryos compared to tissue culture cells. Embryos repair DNA breaks incredibly fast - within minutes! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Big congratulations to our former postdoc @lorenzoorts.bsky.social, now leading her own at the @imbmainz.bsky.social, for receiving the Biochemical Society Early Career Research Award! Amazing news and so well deserved - super proud of you, Laura!
Thank you so much to the Biochemical Society for awarding me this prize and recognising my research "in between fields"! 😀 It is an honour!
👇👇👇 If are you excited about helping us recruit and train the next generation of scientists, don't hesitate to apply! The @viennabiocenter.bsky.social is a great place to work. 🙂
The @vbcscitraining.bsky.social is looking a PhD Program Manager! Needless to say this is an incredible important position. So please apply if you want to help us find, recruit and train the next generation of scientists! RT appreciated!
A big shout-out for @lorenzoorts.bsky.social and @hohmannulrich.bsky.social - super happy for both of you that it worked out! If I was a student starting my career and interested in mechanistic work at the interphase of biochemistry/structural biology/development, I would immediately apply!
Thank you @impvienna.bsky.social for featuring our next career step! The support that Ulrich @hohmannulrich.bsky.social and I received from our postdoc labs (@pauligroup.bsky.social, @juliusbrennecke.bsky.social and @plaschkalab.bsky.social), and now from @imbmainz.bsky.social has been key!

Whole-embryo spatial transcriptomics at subcellular resolution from gastrulation to organogenesis
Gene expression patterns underlie development, but their systematic detection in whole embryos has remained elusive. We introduce a whole-embryo imaging platform using multiplexed error-robust fluores...

Excited for the years to come working with this great crowd @juliusbrennecke.bsky.social @pauligroup.bsky.social @haselbachlab.bsky.social & Andela Saric! 🥳
A consortium of group leaders from IMP, IMBA (Vienna BioCenter) and ISTA has been awarded an FWF Emerging Fields grant to study how germ cells safeguard and pass on genetic information across generations.
I could not agree more with @trayon.bsky.social: We were all supported by amazing scientists, mentors & colleagues that allowed us to achieve our dreams. I want to be such a supportive mentor myself & give back by supporting others - from my own @pauligroup.bsky.social members to other scientists!
This was such an inspirational visit to the @cambiochem.bsky.social (thanks to @ericmiska.bsky.social & Ulrika Yuan for inviting & hosting), and then informally catching up with @trayon.bsky.social + lab @babrahaminst.bsky.social and Juliette Fedry @cellbiol-mrclmb.bsky.social! Science is fun!
Great visit from Andi Pauli @pauligroup.bsky.social to the lab @babrahaminst.bsky.social on Friday — thoughtful feedback, fun discussions, and such a supportive visit. Perfect timing ahead of International Women’s Day 🔬👩🔬
the deadline is coming soon👇 don't miss it, we are looking forward to welcoming all teleost (not just zebrafish 😉) afficionados in Vienna! 🙂🐟🐠🤓

Just published: chemotactic sperm cells become phototactic 💡- by loading photo-activatable second messengers. This allows to "reverse-engineer" chemotactic signaling dynamics and expose cells to signals they would never see in the wild. Honoured to be part of this collaboration with the Kaupp lab.
