Super excited to share my postdoctoral work at @imbavienna.bsky.social @viennabiocenter.bsky.social - We discovered that some retrotransposons, or "jumping genes" 🧬, are able to spread from cell to cell via a new viral infectivity route. A short thread: 🧵👇 (1/7)

I wrote this quickly at a bus stop and didn't realize it would go viral, or else I would have worded it better. But the point is that the media is too credulous about AI killing everyone in 10 years (how?) when climate change is killing people now and will only get worse (we know exactly how).
I resigned from ExxonMobil today. I spent the last three years doing fossil fuel extraction research at both BP and ExxonMobil. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing to maximize extraction while the window to act closes, and gambling with our lives. More below.
“… The studies they were carrying out were full of underlying philosophical assumptions. (…) If your characterization of a term is wrong, you will ask the wrong questions, look in all the wrong places, and ultimately mischaracterize the world.”
I wrote a little something on the value of philosophy for animal cognition. Out now in Science’s Expert Voices column.

A transient RNP compartment boosts translation and growth of mammalian oocytes
Mammalian oocytes undergo an extended growth phase, during which transcription gradually declines. To sustain meiotic divisions and early embryonic development, growing oocytes must accumulate materna...

Pre-print alert! SERBP1 regulates the interactions between ribosomes and different proteins. We find that it prevents interactions between ribosomes and RNF10/RIOK3 to protect ribosomes from selective 40S degradation. Congrats! @nicollearosa.bsky.social www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
SERBP1 is a master regulator of ribosome interactions
Ribosome function depends on interactions with diverse proteins whose activities determine translational efficiency, impose quality control and activate signaling pathways. These many competing activi...
