Later today #GeneralSynod debates All Kinds of Minds, a motion calling on the church to affirm the presence of neurodivergent people in the whole life of the church and to reconsider structures and processes which discriminate against and disadvantage neurodivergent people.

The points being made here about diagnosis and support are so true. That’s why those of us trusted to work in identification services within current assessment frameworks need to be so alert to the variety of autistic experiences

Autistic ppl are so diverse that there are no well-replicated subgroups by separate research teams, and diagnoses should be descriptive rather than prescriptive - support needs to be personalized and based on need. Meanwhile, some carry a specific anti-neurodiversity agenda w/ "profound autism". 1/

www.bmj.com/content/392/... Autistic girls & women: By age 20, they were diagnosing pretty much equal numbers of men & women. Huge study, whole population of Sweden born 1985-2020. Not 1 in 10. Not 1 in 4. Not 1 in 3. Equal numbers, just about. 100 years of research, most based on the wrong info.
