Don't call me a Cyclist

Bikes, drawing, political take lurking

Husband just came in to tell me that since the assassination of Abraham Lincoln every American president has been alive at the same time as Herbert Hoover.

Thinking back to my time in the BWCA on Crooked lake during Spring of 2024 just about a mile just about a mile east of where the 700 acre beartrap fire is currently raging. Sure was soggy then, here's hoping it can be contained.

Got to ride a downhill bike for the first time this weekend. Pretty liberating to ride knowing there was absolutely no way I could get outside the capability of the bike and proud of my hard earned hardtail fundamentals being able to transfer over.

Felt like a good one for the little notepad. Played with matching my photo of the drawing with the original. Best part of Monday morning! #oliveartclub

It does occur to me that one possible (unintentional) benefit of the NYT framing this as new is now that EVERYONE has a giant vehicle, people will feel less individually guilty or need to justify it. Maybe now we can show how the entire auto and petroleum and highest industry pushed us to this.

"After analyzing federal and industry records, including never-before-examined data on vehicle dimensions, we found that the rise of large pickups and S.U.V.s is an important factor." i'm sorry but how the fuck is this correlation just coming to light now?

It's likely, as economic conditions worsen, that the fascists will portray this as a "knife in the back" betrayal by Trump because of Jewish control, which is already taking form if you pay attention. It might seem strange, but MAGA will likely give birth to a post-MAGA / anti-MAGA fascist movement.

After voting for a bunch of local non contested circuit court positions this morning, does anyone have any interesting data on how uncontested elections affect voter turnout in later races? If I'd never voted before and received a ballot for a bunch of non choices I'd probably feel pretty dumb.

This is my favorite climate change chart. Japanese monks, aristocrats, and emperors kept meticulous records of cherry blossom festivals for 1,200 years and accidentally built the world's longest climate dataset.

There was a horrific vehicular murder in the Madison, WI area in the early morning today. On his way to crash into some cop cars, a pick up truck driver drove off the road and onto a separated bike path to intentionally murder a person riding their bike.

It’s almost like green energy is the only way forward and a handful of oil barons are doing everything in their power to keep that from happening so they can get even richer at the cost of literally everything else in the world.

Wall Street’s biggest banks made more money financing green projects than they did from working with fossil fuel companies for a fourth straight year, even as they faced ongoing pressure to pull back from the business

A story I found about Haiti: In 1999, a group of Haitians were tired of political disorder and dreamed of a better life in the United States. So they built a small, 23-foot boat by hand using pine trees, scrap wood, and used nails. They called the boat "Believe in God."

Some photos of Haitians running in the streets. There's smoke in the background. It looks like political disorder. A Haitian man stands next to a wall with some barbed wire behind him. The original Magnum caption said the man felt Haiti was a prison and he dreamed of making it to the United States. He wanted to be a rapper. Some men take a break from building a boat. A boat sets sail far off into the distance.
