Living the car-free dream in Philly. Philly public school parent. Brompton Bicycles are the ultimate urban life hack. I mostly talk about Philly stuff.

I have no shame in admitting I drink this stuff. I’m the only one in my household who drinks wine so it doesn’t make sense to buy the normal size bottles. I wish there were more options for single-serve wine.

My older son has so many earbuds. And it’s my own fault because I must have ordered them for him and I just don’t remember. This one’s cool.

Good evidence for why you should get an air purifier. This is the HEPA filter after about a year. Relying on just your HVAC system’s air filter is not good enough.

Aug 5 // Water Ice The dog days of summer are here - what better way to stay cool than with water ice? For this edition of Wednesday Night Rides, Dan will lead us as we roll past (or near) at least 9 water ice locations in South Philly before ending at Parks on Tap at Wharton Square. We’ll pass:

Prime example of where Philly's local media should really take a look 90 miles to the north where a mayor is going all in on containerized residential trash to greatly increase pickup efficiency and minimize litter & pests. We're missing a critical piece of the solution only looking inwards

Carlton Williams is leaving the Office of Clean and Green Initiatives after helping launch Mayor Parker’s anti-litter efforts. Community leaders say his successor should build on that work while tackling the root causes of waste. Read the full story: https://bit.ly/4cmlbqW

The Cubs just had some Penn State girls volleyball players and their coach lead Take Me Out to the Ballgame. Kinda random. They were just ok singers. But it was genuine and the fans always get into it. I think every ballpark should have real people lead the 7th inning stretch.

The Union tried to argue their presence in Chester would bring money to local businesses but that hasn’t really happened. Nice to see people go to Frontline after the game for drinks and Caribbean food. It seemed like mostly tourists though—I think most locals just drive in+out for the game. 😢

Just finished another Emily St John Mandel book. An engaging story about how a few connected friends have unfortunate circumstances come upon them as a result of their connection.

Our family is united in our support of Tottenham but for MLS, we are a house divided. My boys grew up in Hoboken and NY Red Bulls did a lot of outreach there which is probably why my older son is a Red Bulls supporter. The younger one is a Union fan. I don’t feel strongly about any one team.

A big reason for this is that buses stop way too often in North America, so each stop doesn’t have enough riders to justify the expense of a shelter (on top of that, the excessive stopping slows trips, which further depresses ridership generally)

After living in Europe for a while, it really is appalling how few bus shelters there are in the US or Canada. Most stops are just a pole, how sad

I usually create Apple Notes or Obsidian notes to plan for travel. I swear I had one for my Copenhagen trip last summer and I think I accidentally deleted it. :( I guess I'll just have to go back... 😁

New Jersey sucks. Update on ebike law for non-residents: - “out-of-state residents should register their e-bikes in New Jersey in order to legally ride them in New Jersey” - “Out-of-state riders without a driver’s license are not permitted to ride an e-bike in New Jersey” share.inquirer.com/SFB86m

In a reversal, New Jersey now says Pennsylvania residents should register their e-bikes in New Jersey if visiting

New Jersey has issued about 9,400 e-bike registrations; 182 are for out-of-state residents.

I just found the cheapest way to get Peacock to watch Premier League. Walmart+ ($98/yr) includes Peacock Premium access for free. That's actually cheaper than buying Peacock Premium on its own. AMEX has an offer where you get $49 back on a Walmart+ subscription which makes the total cost $49.

I know inflation represents a basket of goods and some goods and services have gone up in price more than others. But I just ordered some new light bulbs today that I had last ordered in Aug 2025. The price went up 80%! From $8.74 to $15.70!

I finally deleted my Threads account. I logged in for the first time in 2 years and was shocked people actually use it. I'm sure X users may say the same about Bluesky but when Elon took over X, I was done and it's just unconscionable to keep using that shitty platform.
