I’m so cross that Exeter is telling students & soon-to-be students that their degrees will not be impacted by the proposed cuts. It’s not true. Students and degree programmes will be impacted if there are no longer subject specialists doing the teaching. #DefendExeterUni
The excellent reputation of our humanities degrees has been built on years of research-led teaching. Students are taught by top academics producing cutting edge research within their own sub-disciplines. We are not generalists. We are not interchangeable. #DefendExeterUni

The University of Exeter houses one of the best Theology/Religion departments in the UK. It will be a huge loss for the field if the department is decimated. It is one of many humanities departments under threat and like similar moves at US institutions should be a concern to everyone in academia.
A statement from Exeter UCU branch @ucu.org.uk - please share far and wide.

Digital Humanities often focus on data and tools. Critical Infrastructure Studies asks a deeper question: who builds, controls, and maintains the systems that shape what becomes visible, searchable, and knowable? An important perspective for the age of AI. #DigitalHumanities #AI #VisualCulture

AI is not only a technical question, it is a deeply human one. In this new Substack post, I offer a first theological engagement with Pope Leo XIV’s Magnifica Humanitas and ask what it means to remain human in an age of AI. open.substack.com/pub/digitald...
I can confirm that using claude to write rust works pretty well. RustMallet is a whisker faster than Java Mallet at training topic models, and adds some tweaks that I have avoided in Mallet for stability reasons (multiple saved states by default). github.com/mimno/RustMa...

Colleagues from all over the world, please think about the combination DH2027 in Ireland + CCLS 2027 in the Netherlands. They're only a few days apart. @uniofgalway.bsky.social @rug.nl
#CCLS2027 goes @rug.nl !!! @fpianz.eurosky.social and his team are looking forward to welcoming you to the beautiful city of Groningen.
There's a genre of LLM criticism that I find so destructively unhelpful: using a single vague prompt to "analyze" data, e.g. "summarize the themes across this collection of texts," to claim "see! LLMs don't work." & it's getting published! Reviewers this is not good work pls reject it if you see it.
Biggest comeback in history? 999: Icelanders convert to Christianity & ditch Norse myth↩️ 1200's: Snorri Sturluson uses the power of euhemerism to make Norse myth biblical↩️ 1930's: a very Catholic Norse scholar pilfers the edda for character names↩️ 2026: Pope quotes a character called Gandalf 🇮🇸👑

We worked really hard to produce and get this report to you. Hoping that our report reaches as many people as the other Yale report from a few weeks ago. This one was faculty grass roots, and paints a slightly different picture. (No shade on my colleagues working on the commissioned one. Honest).
Today, the AAUP Yale Chapter releases our report on The State of Academic Freedom at Yale. Uncertain that university leaders will protect academic freedom when tested, Yale faculty are managing risk alone and making changes that narrow what Yale teaches, researches, and communicates to the world.
I maintain a pretty active presence on LinkedIn. One of the things I find striking is how AI-cautious my Bsky network is, and how AI-for-business gung-ho my LinkedIn network is. I don't always know what to make of this distinction. I haven't figured out how to think about AI in industry yet.
I’ve almost drowned twice. The first was at a school swimming gala where, luckily, my distress was immediately obvious. The second was in a busy swimming pool surrounded by friends and only one person spotted me. Otherwise I’d have died 31 years ago. Archive link because £££: archive.is/5hPOq

Every summer I repost this article on how to spot drowning. Please read it and pass on. In the last few years I’ve had SIX messages from people who saved a kid’s life after clicking on the link from my feed. slate.com/technology/2...

"Re-focusing on data also means rethinking what counts as meaningful work. Preparing data isn’t just a technical step; it carries so many interpretive choices. It’s where all our beloved hermeneutics live." Such a good rant...er...post by @sarahalang.bsky.social. Well worth your time to read.
Are you also starting to get tired of the constant gesturing that we need better Research/ #AIEthics that doesn’t lead anywhere?😵💫 Better data --> better research. Sounds obvious, but that's not where the attention goes. A rant. And some answers ;) latex-ninja.com/2026/05/17/w... #DH
