Inouye Solar Telescope, features as small as 19 km across can be resolved. The wispy things are magnetic field boundaries formed by Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities. The island of Ireland for scale.
The rise in Niño 3.4 region sea surface temperatures over the past few weeks has been nothing short of astonishing. We are now hotter than any days during the 1997/1998 super El Niño event, and we are still many months from the peak.
The precipitation anomaly chart is as brown as vast stretches of the landscape in Germany. The drought is clearly visible across wide areas and has long since become part of everyday life for many people.

Dear Australia: fuel prices are not about to jump. What is about to happen is that you will pay something closer to the real price of oil reliance, rather than forcing your fellow taxpayers who either don't drive or drive less to make up the difference.

This is an important point. While some hard limits (cannot be overcome by any means) to adaptation might be identified through biophysical research, identifying most hard limits and all soft limits (we hit because we choose not to do things that are needed) requires actually trying to adapt.

And that’s being generous. Adaptation has limits - and they’ll vary by system - but we won’t reach them until we genuinely mobilize to reduce risk.

I'm not sure folks have realized just how crazy the second half of 2026 and 2027 will be for global temperatures – on the back of a record-smashing El Niño event. Here is my latest estimate of where both years will end up compared to global temperatures since 1850.
Neoclassical econ assumes rationality. The corollary of, "If you're so smart, why aren't you rich?" is "you're rich, so you must be very smart!" Thus, people assume that if powerful, well-compensated CEOs insist that "AI is changing everything," well then, *AI must be changing everything*. 1/
