Following public false claims on autism causation and attacks on science, INSAR has released a statement that people are “born with autism” www.autism-insar.org/page/insarst.... Autism as innate and lifelong is the focus my new free paper (long thread incoming): www.frontiersin.org/journals/int...

@drstevenkapp.bsky.social has timely new paper (w/ 600+ sources) on autism as a lifelong neurodivergence underpinned by sensory+ differences prior to & if applicable even after meeting criteria. It deconstructs "autistic regression” & challenges outgrowing autism: www.frontiersin.org/journals/int...

Neurodivergence related access in work is intimately bound up with the norms of communication. This includes subtle things relating to enforcement of style, pacing, neuronormative email etiquette, and so on. I think this often gets overlooked in favour of a focus on less subtle things.
My third PhD study has been published and is currently available OA, just in time for submitting my thesis 🎉🤸 We tested a conceptual model wherein positive autistic identity is associated with flourishing via positive body image for some autistic folks! www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Body appreciation mediates the association between satisfaction with autistic identity and flourishing in autistic adults
Underpinned by the neurodiversity paradigm, scholars are increasingly interested in relationships between positive autistic identity (i.e., feeling sa…

Is it normal to cry over your laptop in the last month of your PhD? (usually people joking say "I'm asking for a friend", but I'm really autistic/socially anxious and so I have no friends) 💀
I am so excited to share my first publication, a labor of love! My co-1st author @katerinaldi1.bsky.social and I examined weight related terminology preference within two samples of folks in larger bodies🥰 www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Words are heavy: Weight-related terminology preferences are associated with larger-bodied people’s health behaviors and beliefs
Clinicians and researchers may struggle with appropriate terminology when discussing body size. Pathologizing larger bodies has led to use of medicali…

Ok, sure. But what about the Troubles in Northern Ireland and the IRA and the invasion of the soviet union in Afghanistan and the rise of the Taliban? See a trend here? Make-up, my arse 💀
Literally cannot wait to share this ✨new publication✨ with y’all. doi.org/10.1016/j.bo... Tl;dr. White working-class women’s body image is rooted in appearance norms, rather than appearance ideals (they are conceptually different). Super important to consider intersectionality of class x gender
The video of last week's methods panel is up! Come check out Freddie Jones, Léon Van Ommen and I talked about using qualitative methods with nonspeaking people. Link to the full panel video (and to the slides for my section) available here: www.heasutherland.com/talk/ethnogr...

It absolutely blows my mind that the willy wonka experience happened only THIS YEAR. 2024, you have been way too long and way too unkind (except for gracing us with The Unknown)

Sharing this with new connections on here 👀 We are looking for UK-based #ActuallyAutistic folks to take part in a one-to-one interview to help us explore how they feel about their body and certain eating styles If interested, why not send me (an autistic researcher) an email at PL428@pgr.aru.ac.uk
People’s worth isn’t determined by their ability to work. We all deserve a decent living standard regardless. Just under 1/4 of the UK population is disabled, and anyone could become so. Please, ditch “strivers vs skivers” narratives and instead repair our social security net.
