@libdems.org.uk calling on @andyburnham.bsky.social to reconvene COBRA and start urgent cross-party talks on tackling climate impact. Joint letter from @eddavey.libdems.org.uk and myself

It’s taken five, yes FIVE, heatwaves for Andy Burnham to finally break his silence on extreme heat hitting farmers, families and our economy. Lib Dems have long called for extreme weather to be a national security issue. @pippaheylings.bsky.social
The implications of global biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse are UK national security issues impacting our food security and long term resilience and need to be considered as such. I am working on a Liaison Committee special enquiry committee proposal on this. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

The savings speak for themselves. ⚡ 🏠 The average UK household can save around £1,000 a year on electricity bills by installing solar panels and a battery. 🍦 Styles Ice Cream saved £14,000 in 2025 by producing and selling ice cream using solar power.
With the holiday season well underway, we're reflecting on our recent solar-powered ice cream adventure in Westminster. ☀️🍦 It was a great way to start conversations about how electric technologies like solar panels can help households, businesses and community spaces cut their energy costs.
People receiving means-tested benefits must be named on their energy bill by 23 August to receive the £150 Warm Home Discount this winter. If you think you should be eligible, contact your energy supplier before the deadline.
Hospice leaders are recording "Dear Prime Minister" videos calling for sustainable funding. Corin Dalby's national petition has already gained thousands of signatures. You can add your voice and message to the PM here: url.uk.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/lNM5C2xK5C...
This is a stark warning: the climate emergency is here, yet the Government moves at a snail’s pace. It's time for a national strategy: funding cool hubs for vulnerable groups, mandating cooling and ventilation in new homes, supporting drought-affected farmers and heat-proofing NHS facilities.
Since you ask, yes, climate change really is making wildfires worse (say 45 of 50 studies) interactive.carbonbr... Ofc, fossil-fuel emissions are not the only reason (also land management, arson, etc etc) But these newspapers are palpably DESPERATE to find ANY OTHER cause 🫠
4. The Daily Mail Double-page spread: “Evacuate! ‘Out of control wildfire…fears for Sizewell” Lead comment slot: “Why the flames…have been fanned by the Green agenda”
3. The Daily Telegraph Frontpage story: "Wildfires close in on Sizewell [nuclear plant]" Also in the paper: "As wildfires rage, Britain isn't ready…" Meanwhile: "Rewilding blamed for…wildfire" "Net-zero…'raises risk of wildfires'" "emptying countryside…vulnerable to blazes"
2. The Times Frontpage: “Wildfire in Suffolk near nuclear plant” Comment article: “Wildfires suggest rewilding needs a rethink”
🧵Right-leaning newspapers are trying to blame Europe's raging wildfires on everything EXCEPT fossil fuels 1. The Wall Street Journal Frontpage story: "Greece fights wildfires as Europe crisis spreads" WSJ editorial: "How green policies fuel fires in Europe"
I recently sponsored an event in Parliament with Electrify Britain and Styles Ice Cream, on how solar cuts electricity bills for small businesses. Styles even fitted solar panels to their ice cream vans to power the freezers on the go! I'll keep championing small businesses leading on clean energy ☀️
East Anglia is officially in drought. In South Cambridgeshire our aquifers are being depleted, and the Cam's flow is kept up by water pumped from our aquifers. I'm pressing ministers to make water and sewage capacity a genuine deal-breaker for growth, and demanding the Fens Reservoir gets built.
Can solar power make ice cream taste better? We think so! 🍦☀️ We brought solar-powered ice cream to Westminster, where MPs heard how Styles Ice Cream cut energy bills by switching to solar-powered production and retail.
Huge thanks to David and Olly for making the trip from Taunton and helping show what an electrified future can look - and taste - like. And thanks to @pippaheylings.bsky.social and @fleuranderson.bsky.social for sponsoring a fantastic afternoon.
Social care is finally centre stage after years of Liberal Democrat campaigning. But no plan is complete without palliative and end of life care. Liberal Democrats took a 15,000 signature petition to Downing Street for Arthur Rank Hospice, and I'll keep pushing for it.
The Liberal Democrats are calling for cooling to be built into every new home, and for air conditioning in schools and hospitals. Air con is basically a heat pump in reverse. The right design keeps homes cool in summer and warm in winter. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

This year's heatwaves have had a huge impact on farmers when the sector is in the middle of a perfect storm which will end up hitting every one of us at the tills. Farms are on a cliff edge. Watch my take on why the Govt must act urgently at this critical juncture for our food & national security.
I represented South Cambridgeshire at the inaugural meeting of the new All-Party Parliamentary Group on Chalk Streams, set up by my Lib Dem colleague Sarah Green. South Cambridgeshire is home to some of these rare, precious waterways. I am fighting for the protection they deserve.
Extreme heat is back, and the UK was built for a climate that no longer exists. South Cambs could see summers 4°C hotter, with 6x more days above 30°C, and I've heard from families with overheated classrooms and sick elderly residents. I spoke up in Parliament to demand real climate resilience.
Congratulations to Miatta Fahnbulleh on becoming Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero. Families in South Cambridgeshire are still struggling with energy bills. I'll back bold action on insulation, onshore wind, solar and GB Energy, while pushing the government to raise its game.
Andy Burnham is our new PM. I hope this ends years of chaos and incompetence. He has a narrow window to rebuild trust that matters for families here in South Cambridgeshire. We'll work with him constructively where we can, and where we disagree, we'll challenge him to raise his game
Government indecision leads to chaos! The Government has failed to make a decision on Cambridgeshire's local government reorganisation, leaving residents and councils in the dark yet again. I asked the Secretary of State today if he understands the chaos this is causing.
It's semi-final day! England take on Argentina tonight for a place in Sunday's final. Moments like this bring communities together and inspire future generations. Good luck to the whole team, especially Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham, I'll be cheering you on tonight. #girlsfootball #comeonEngland!
🌿 @pippaheylings.bsky.social—CNCC Vice Chair—at the Seventh Carbon Budget debate: “We must stop treating nature protections as a blocker to economic growth, and I ask the Government to get rid of reckless rhetoric dividing climate and nature rather than seeing them as indivisible necessities.”
Today, as the UK faces a red warning for extreme heat, MPs will vote on the Seventh Carbon Budget. Read @pippaheylings.bsky.social blog on why the Lib Dems support the new target but why the Government must look beyond energy supply in reducing emissions. ldnc.org.uk/blog/carbon-...

The UK Government's own security assessment shows the threat to Britain’s security and prosperity by the destruction of nature. Reports the UK chose not to support action to tackle deforestation because of the “optics” is deeply disappointing. 1/ www.thetimes.com/article/85f2...

This week I presented my Chalk Stream UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site Bill in Parliament for a second time. The UK holds 85% of the world's chalk streams which are crystal-clear habitats with unique wildlife. It is important we protect these rare and national jewels.
