Check out the latest edition of InTouch magazine for an article that I wrote about Ireland’s achievements in literacy. As the title suggests, we are doing very well internationally, but that’s not the whole story. Read the article to find out more… (pg.45) intouch.into.ie/html5/reader...
Read this yesterday which was similar - if the point is to learn by reading/writing, it's probably worth doing the hard/long way. I find LLMs to be enormously useful in other spaces (it's actually pretty good, I think, about teaching Socratically) claytonwramsey.com/blog/prompt/
I'd rather read the prompt
I have literally never seen LLM writing that actually improved my life.

Someone asked me why I don’t let AI summarize reading for me or write drafts and the answer is that either of those shortcuts would eliminate the process of thinking. And the thinking is the important part.
Even accepting the premise that AI produces useful writing (which no one should), using AI in education is like using a forklift at the gym. The weights do not actually need to be moved from place to place. That is not the work. The work is what happens within you.

Word of the day is ‘huff-snuff’ (16th century): a hectoring bully or braggart.
“Should we build a fence at the top of the cliff, or should we put an ambulance at the bottom?” Right now, we’re seeing far more ambulances than fences in our school districts…🚑 podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/s... @ehanford.bsky.social #ScienceOfReading #PupsAndPodcasts
🧵 Reading Recovery 🧵 You are probably aware that Reading Recovery has come into question a lot in recent years. This is because many teachers and parents are now aware of reading research, and how the Reading Recovery does not align with it very well. 1/n #EdChatIE #ReadingRecovery

I think a massive opportunity for children with additional needs would be to scrap the Friday spelling test. I cannot emphasise the amount of anticipatory anxiety and stress this can cause our children who (in a lot of cases) don’t benefit from it. Often they have memory difficulties. #EdChatIE
I think it’s so helpful to frame instruction in terms of Tiers. When we do this we realise that providing whole class instruction in the form of levelled groups is skipping Tier 1 entirely and moving everyone in the class straight to Tier 2. It places a ceiling on student’s achievement straight away
Absolutely. There are some schools working 10 teachers down in Dublin. Many schools SET departments have been decimated. The staffing crisis is one of the biggest barriers right now. #Edchatie
One of the biggest constraints in some areas is the retention and supply crisis. Anecdotally what would have been ‘learning support’ has been considerably squeezed by this. #edchatie
#EdChatIE 🧵 I have adjusted the Continuum of Support graphic to reflect the research into Mutli-Tiered Support Systems (MTSS). A very well known quote in this field is “You can’t intervene your way out of a Tier 1 problem.”
Delighted to see videos like this demonstrating the shortcomings of AI for academic writing. My times are full of ads for ‘undetectable AI’. It cannot replace human thought. youtu.be/Nkqf3Me1U8E?... #EdChatIE #AI #ChatGPT #AcademicWriting #PhDLife

🧵An important part of the primary experience is having a lovely time- adults ringfencing the unique state of childhood and ensuring that primary is a glorious place to be little. Playful and joyful are not the antonyms of high standards and aspiration.
