The book Green Crime keyed me in to the true extent of frontline work that indigenous people in every part of the globe do to push back against environmental exploitation and ecocide. Respect is due and less 'disneyfication' of indigenous practises needed for sure.

Real leadership is when Indigenous knowledge is treated as science, not folklore. It’s when farmers' agroecology becomes policy. We are not stakeholders; we are the architects. 🌱

At Natural Surroundings wildflower centre nr Holt, they have a 'Romanian sock meadow' After a visit to the meadows of Romania, they put soil in a barrel and planted all the seeds that had hitched a ride in their socks Voila, a sock meadow!
Very thorough paper. Interesting points on the role of soil invertebrates and plant roots on soil water infiltration and implications of droughts for the long term.

Really interesting experiment showing how cutting twice a year for three years increases species-richness in a nitrogen-rich* environment. The second cutting in November makes sense given wetter, warmer winters *no difference for low-nutrient sites

I remember a #FarmingforNature podcast ep where a farmer said he knew he needed to change how he worked when the crows stopped following the plough (no worms in the soil). The food web collapses from the bottom up when we don't radically change.

We who live on the land feel it every single day — in quieter fields, fewer buzzing insects, and harvests that feel more fragile. Our food systems are at a critical juncture.

Worked on this wildfire investigation for the last number of months with colleagues across the EU. To publish today is, sadly, very timely. While Ireland doesn’t experience the ‘mega fires’ we see in Spain etc, the damage caused to protected sites here is actually far greater than most of Europe.

"conventionally managed farms were characterized by a greater dominance of supergeneralist species"... This study is a great reminder that the abundance of activity isn't a positive indicator if it benefits only a few species. Good start but there is always more to do and more to learn

A friend saved some orchids from a sand quarry before the trucks came in. Unfortunately I know of another esker grassland due for 'development' later this year. Logical next step: order a ton bag of horti sand & convert the front into nursery/rescue for novel grassland plants from Laois.
What an amazing find! (Also Praegar really did get everywhere!?) Hoping to join in on one of the BSBI walks up north one day.

This is the first record of this fern from this area since Praeger’s record in 1887! It really did smell like lemons… @bsbibotany.bsky.social @bsbiireland.bsky.social
