Hey #amsmt25 folks - I made a feed for the conference. It should capture more folks who just write "AMS/SMT" or "SMT/AMS" or have common variations of the hashtag (e.g. amssmt25, amsmt2025, smt25, ams25, etc.) bsky.app/profile/did:...

Texas created an outcomes-based funding model for community colleges. Students and colleges outperformed expectations, so now the state wants to change the rules so they don't have to pay what they promised. www.texastribune.org/2026/07/22/t...
Texas may limit community college's incentive funding
A formula designed to reward colleges for student success generated larger payouts than budgeted. Now, Texas’ higher education agency may limit how schools receive such funding.

My apologies to the Reductress, I wasn’t familiar with your game.
There is no bigotry against white men in America. For fuck's sake, you patheric little manchildren. I'm sorry your bigotry and shitty jokes and shitty behavior got pushback, try contemplation and reflection and therapy instead of whining your way to fascism.
God how wild would it be to work in a university that actually wants to see your discipline prosper? Can you even imagine?
the hyping-AI-in-print to retraction pipeline

Today is #NationalPenguinDay so we're remembering that time we made a Penguin out of Penguin Books. It's a Penguin Penguin. 🐧
Some thoughts about the President of the United States speaking about ending a civilization. The president speaks genocide. Anyone who has been involved in that conversation or associated actions would be complicit. And so we too must speak. Not only about crimes, but about their legal punishment.

For a unit on experimentalism and graphic notations, I tried finding books about Earle Brown online, but all the results were about earl grey
If AI LLM's are copying and stealing our writing why does the output always just sound like our shittiest writing
I mean, is Kid Rock ever not baffled though
Kid Rock posted after the election that he and AG Pam Bondi were going to "whoop ass" on the companies ripping off music fans. Bondi's DOJ just sold those fans out. And Kid Rock is baffled. My latest in @nytopinion.nytimes.com ... www.nytimes.com/2026/03/17/o...

"I got my PhD by writing prompts instead of doing research, I'm winning" got some bad news, there still no jobs and now you also know nothing
Iran’s people were facing a horrible shortage of water before the war began. If we are destroying desalination plants and setting fire to Teheran we are committing unfathomable crimes.
👀 Over the last few months, I’ve been working with the terrific triumvirate @spparkle.bsky.social, @emiliekmmurphy.bsky.social & Hannah Yip to set up “Sonance: A Journal of Early Modern Sound Studies”, a diamond open access journal dedicated to historic sounds in all their wondrous & eclectic forms.
and, if I'm not being naive, insist that students WRITE
It’s going to sound quaint, but the best way to resist an AI takeover of the humanities is to assign physical books, sit around, read them, and argue about ideas. Academic has become such a competitive arena, that we ourselves are trained to look for the winning angle, instead of the best education.
REMEMBER: All the "Don't use em-dashes" "don't use rule of three" advice because it makes your writing "look like AI" is because they stole actual writers work, and their "predict the next thing" stuff just simulates what WE FUCKING DO. Keep writing well. Use every style and trick you have. Fuck AI.
getting propped up like this is why the so-called AI bubble isn't going to just sink or swim according to the free market values of the supposed classical liberals cheering this shit on

"Warren stated that job outcomes were a 'key factor' in the decision-making process—within the previous decade, only a 'tiny percentage' of PhD students who graduated from the LCS program went on to receive tenure track at an R1 institution." An absurd metric & sign of the conservatism of higher ed.
FWIW every olympic curling match tonight was better sport than the sports portion of the superbowl
Benito is a threat b/c he makes art so alluring and enjoyable you want to understand everything about it and then you end up learning about sugar and slavery and colonialism and the Taínos and Hawaii and then you probably have some thoughts of your own, and that's why art is powerful and dangerous
Every time you hear that such and such major is being eliminated because it isn't popular or it doesn't make money or it doesn't serve the streamlined mission of the institution, you should think about the WaPo cuts. What is a paper without books and sports? A college without history and languages.

Deleted a post about “what’s your least favorite song” because the vibes are bad enough already. Instead: what’s your favorite song that has a long title, say at least 6 words long? Mine: “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town” (Pearl Jam)
