I step around to the front of the car, observing the damage—the headlight on my side is totally crushed, the plastic gone and the inner light broken. There is a considerable dent and crumpling across the hood and bumper. It's a wonder that the deer managed to make it out relatively unscathed. I turn and look in the direction the deer wandered off in, but I can't see anything through the rain and the darkness. Again, I am overcome with an unsettling feeling. Toward the bottom of the car, a piece of plastic is dangling oddly and digging into the gravel. I don't know anything about cars, so I have no idea what this piece of plastic is or where it ought to be attached, but its current position doesn't seem ideal.

I quickly get back into the car. Grace has her phone open, holding it up toward the roof of the car in an attempt to get a signal; we've already learned that our carrier has spottier reception here than in Chicago, but up until now, it's been usable. The storm complicates things. Grace looks my way, exasperated at the situation we're in, and snaps her phone shut. She immediately flips it open again, pressing it up to the roof and staring at the little screen like it owes her money. "How's it look?"

With the flashlight on my lap, I peel off my rain jacket and discard it on the floor in the back. "I'm not sure," I admit. I open the center console between our seats and place the flashlight there, in case we need it again. "We're pretty dinged-up."

"Yes, mom." Renee nodded, flipping through a few dot matrix copies of a very sparse resume- Seventeen. Highschool early graduate. No jobs, no qualifications. Soccer for two years. Member of the Future Leader's club. A few AP classes. Auto shop star. She tucked them into her bag, opening the refrigerator and picking up the plate with a few slices of cucumber topped with a dollop of cream cheese and a single pepperoni, tucking one into her mouth.
