I'm just gonna say: it somewhat baffles me that people who are understandably skeptical of opaque LLMs as legitimate sources of information will suddenly go full on "the computer KNOWS" when they are using opaque tools to "detect" AI. The computer does not know.

Having ranted about school curriculum books, I’ve just seen my son’s summer reading list, and all I can say is “I was right”. A more depressing collection would be tricky to assemble. Are we actively trying to convey to kids the idea that reading is dismal and arduous?

Twitch and Amazon are apparently planning to use streams to train Generative AI. Multiple sources tell me it will be announced in the coming months, despite some internal friction against it. Creators may be able to opt out of some training data.

based on the slush I've read, you know what I've found is the best way to tell if an author used AI? they won't fucking shut up about it either they brag about it bc they thought it was the best idea ever OR they incessantly try to rationalize and defend it by saying they ONLY used it for XYZ

I worry that most cynical among us, hopped up on 30 years of law and order rhetoric, will say "this is the system working: he didn't do anything wrong and now he's free." As if the terror and wide-scale publicity of an arrest and federal prosecution is not a horrible punishment in and of itself.

Using lists of three is not an "AI tell." It's a common trait in human writing because our brains biologically want to make sure there's always one thing to marry, one thing to fuck, and one thing to murder.

This also works with plagiarists. There are a few different people who've stolen my work, and multiple people who've talked to them and assumed that work was theirs later came across my stuff and were like "yeah, when you talk about it, suddenly it all makes sense"

For writers worried that they won't be able to "prove" their work isn't Spicy Autocomplete--worry not. You thought about every choice and will be able to talk about those choices easily and clearly. Folks who used the slop machine didn't make choices and won't have anything to say about why

Don't try to figure out how to deform your work to make it "more salable" or whatever. Just write, and submit your stories. It's the only thing you can control. And you are not going to scuttle your career if you put 2 spaces after a period or have the wrong sort of main character or whatever.
