Like, I write fic because it was festering in my head, but I posted it publicly like an old lady going ps ps ps and see who wants to chat about it. Literally all my internet friendships have been built by talking about fic with people. It's a deeply social activity to me.

It's interesting that AO3 is down for such a lengthy stretch during what's arguably the most consumption-oriented/extractive era in fanfic's history. People dumping thousands of fics on gdrive are being hailed as heroes, drowning out fic writers saying, I didn't consent to be *republished* there.

ao3 has protection against basic data scraping which is used to train AI, taking works offsite exposes them to that risk also, a lot of these fics may have been only accessible for registered users on ao3 and sharing it is going against the author's express wish that the work only be read on ao3

This is an extremely good point. Nothing wrong with uploading your own fics or sharing things privately amongst friends. But don’t reupload work that isn’t yours publicly. Even with the best intentions, it’s not yours to do whatever with. #ao3

From 24×81 on tumblr:

guys. don't upload fics that aren't yours to a temporary website just because you need to read it on something that looks like ao3. i shouldn't even have to explain it. people are sharing massive folders of downloaded fic amongst fandoms, probably more than enough to last 4 weeks if it gets that bad. taking that work and uploading it somewhere else without the authors permission is gross. don't go signing up to a website that you don't even know who's running it and leaving kudos and comments there.

It's Banned Books Week. My fellow librarians, listen carefully: your book displays should be almost exclusively writers who are alive. Yes, I know classic literature is also being banned, but most of those authors are dead. They aren't suffering financially from bans and challenges.

Customer: I asked ChatGPT what I should read and -- Me: Well I'm sure its advice is *great* because LLMs are all just massive databases of books stolen from me and my fellow writers. Customer: Wow I did not know that. Keep telling people. Also if you want to know what to read, ask a bookseller.

TERFs aren't feminists. "Protecting women and girls" is not actually a feminist byline. Especially when it's protection they're not asking for, from people who aren't the problem. Sexist men also say and do this, all the time. All the time.
