Review excerpt - This series flew out in 2024 and immediately fell under the radar despite being one of the more gorgeous comics projects this decade. Perhaps the name turned off a few who might otherwise have flocked to it - admittedly, the title conjures up the worst excesses of the age of “Epic Bacon" - mashing up bears, pirates, vikings, and queens certainly sounds like it's going to be something along the lines of an extended Chuck Norris joke, from back when people still told those. The truth of the matter is something else entirely: this is a strange work, intentionally a bit opaque. Barravecchia has garnered attention for his covers and commercial work in recent years, but his sequential work here is dense and baroque. The immediate referent is Bill Sienkiewicz, another cartoonist who brought the expansive attitude of a painter with multimedia chops to the comics page, with similarly unclassifiable results.Bear Pirate Viking Queen #1, cover by Jonathan Marks Barravecchia!
