Alaska vowed to resolve the murders of Indigenous people. But when one nonprofit asked state law enforcement officials for a fundamental piece of data — a list of Indigenous murders they’d investigated — the state said no. (Published Aug. 2025 with @adn.com)

Alaska Vowed to Resolve Murders of Indigenous People. Now It Refuses to Provide Their Names.

When the nonprofit Data for Indigenous Justice filed public records requests with the Alaska Department of Public Safety concerning cases it had investigated, the state rejected them.

Marjane Satrapi died today & the world lost a powerful and eloquent voice. I met her almost 20yrs ago and spent an afternoon w/her drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes. I loved her. She was only 56. That monsters live to 100 proves to me of the absence of god. filmfreakcentral.net/2008/04/satr...

I wrote a whole bloody book partially in response to this problem. Exercise should be for everybody, but schools devote way too much energy to kids who *already* enjoy competitive sports & not enough to those who might just like to move their bodies blissfully without worrying about personal bests.

So I want to talk about the problem with mandatory fitness tests in schools. I’m sure nothing I’ll say is new, but I still think it’s important to say: they absolutely place too much emphasis on competition and too little emphasis on helping kids who might actually benefit from it.

Oh I forgot to mention. They used to post our RANKED distances on the bulletin board or whatever so EVERYONE knew how EVERYONE did. I think the best I ever did was 4.5 laps of the track in 12 minutes (passing was 6 laps). Not only did I not pass I got to see my name at the bottom of the list.

The standard I had to meet was to be able to run 1.5 miles in 12 minutes. Every few months, they’d take us to the track to attempt the 12 minutes. Other than that, I was never taught how to train myself to be able to do this.

Right now there's nothing on the front page of CNN, The Guardian, or the Washington Post about today's landfall of Super Typhoon Sinlaku in a US territory. The NY Times only has this short blurb after scrolling all the way to the very bottom of the page.

Category 4 Super Typhoon Sinlaku is making landfall now over Saipan in the US territory of the Northern Mariana Islands. Sustained winds of 150mph and 50ft waves. Folks in Saipan are US citizens and they need our help.

It really seems like a necessary part of being a person who seeks power is being convinced that you are different from other people, no matter how little evidence there may be for that belief.

Trying to catch up on work after a forced 10-day break bc schools closed but: 1) there's a water main break and a boil water advisory at work, 2) colleagues with kids are canceling meetings bc again no water, and 3) Microsoft Duo is down and I can't access my email or messaging services. What even.
