You can/should read Emily Wilson's latest take on the Odyssey, but I'm logging on to convey my hairdresser's reaction. She was AGHAST that Nolan, with his million $ budget, gave Matt Damon ONLY 6 hair extensions. As a result, his hair did not blow around properly, & that ruined the film for her.

It's never occurred to me that the point of an allegory about cheaper goods being a worse long term investment was about poor people making bad choices. I recommend Ehrenreich's Nickel and Dimed for anyone confused about this or who hasn't had real, lived experience as someone with no good options.

The most terrifying enshittification I've discovered has been learning that Microsoft Word documents no longer auto-save if you are not saving them to one of their own proprietary cloud services. I'm slapping control-S like it's 1999.

“BLUESKY SHOULD BE A PLACE WHERE YOU HAVE POINTLESS, AGGRAVATING ARGUMENTS WITH BAD-FAITH PROVOCATEURS, GORMLESS LIBERALS, AND RUSSIAN BOTS!!!!” I’m good, thanks. Honestly.

Its embarrassing how many grown ass adults live in these fantasies where people work for some nonsense like the artificial cultures oligarchs manufacture over survival.

Dumbass CEO of Anthropic thinks people should work for the "corporate mission" over survival.

me: the simpsons have four fingers on each hand so you’d think they’d live in a base 8 society but as far as I can tell there’s no evidence of that in the show my wife: *screaming during labor* the obgyn: hold on i want to hear more about this

One interesting thing to observe in the Odyssey fracas has been people's relationship to expertise. Wilson's an expert classicist. Nolan's an expert director. There are many expert film critics. They might all be at odds over a film, yet remain worth heeding in their areas of knowledge.

One of the worst things about @harvardpress.bsky.social is the way they fly to Australia and force me at gunpoint to keep ordering from the Loeb Classical Library. That's not okay. Or, as Hermione might've said in Ovid's HEROIDES: "arma invidiosa tulisti" ("You carried loathsome weapons").

I reckon “consumer preference” here ought to have a superscript asterisk that leads to this note: Productivity has skyrocketed yet wages have plummeted and many people simply can’t afford more expensive goods.

I think my most genuinely unpopular take is that a widely held and genuine consumer preference for cheaper, lower-quality goods, not private equity, is driving the decline in quality of consumer goods like clothing and housewares.
