You can/should read Emily Wilson's latest take on the Odyssey, but I'm logging on to convey my hairdresser's reaction. She was AGHAST that Nolan, with his million $ budget, gave Matt Damon ONLY 6 hair extensions. As a result, his hair did not blow around properly, & that ruined the film for her.

If AI disappeared tomorrow, the only change in my life would be that google search suddenly got better again.
Guys like this don’t realize that they are the freak
Delightful description of the TLS offices circa 1980 in Hollinghurst's "The Stranger's Child"
Anyone who refers to others who don’t use AI to create their art as “gatekeepers” is an immediate red flag
There is a lengthy pro-AI screed in the latest HWA newsletter and it is . . . a mood.
the horse actors on Little House are so good at acting like Prairie times horses
[someone in 1000 years finding the only extant record of our times, which happens to be a hard drive full of Truth Social posts] oh look, some facts from the past
4. Every other discipline thinks they can do history but they often cannot
Almost nothing in my source material can be considered "fact" lol. It's just shades of being wrong and context. If facts existed we wouldn't need historians.
will the historian who puts the last fact in order please turn out the lights
"History involves sorting and organizing hundreds of thousands of facts" I remain astounded by how loud and wrong people are about what history actually is.
Historians, relax. Your jobs just became "delightfully easy".

It's never occurred to me that the point of an allegory about cheaper goods being a worse long term investment was about poor people making bad choices. I recommend Ehrenreich's Nickel and Dimed for anyone confused about this or who hasn't had real, lived experience as someone with no good options.
I see this page has been shared from my next upcoming Conan epic - 'The LOST SOUL of DRENN A’ DUIR', for SSoC. 🙂
The most terrifying enshittification I've discovered has been learning that Microsoft Word documents no longer auto-save if you are not saving them to one of their own proprietary cloud services. I'm slapping control-S like it's 1999.
“BLUESKY SHOULD BE A PLACE WHERE YOU HAVE POINTLESS, AGGRAVATING ARGUMENTS WITH BAD-FAITH PROVOCATEURS, GORMLESS LIBERALS, AND RUSSIAN BOTS!!!!” I’m good, thanks. Honestly.
JUST IN: Staff reportedly increasingly concerned that companies are hiring them for the value of their output, as opposed to their wellbeing and development.
Its embarrassing how many grown ass adults live in these fantasies where people work for some nonsense like the artificial cultures oligarchs manufacture over survival.

me: the simpsons have four fingers on each hand so you’d think they’d live in a base 8 society but as far as I can tell there’s no evidence of that in the show my wife: *screaming during labor* the obgyn: hold on i want to hear more about this
One interesting thing to observe in the Odyssey fracas has been people's relationship to expertise. Wilson's an expert classicist. Nolan's an expert director. There are many expert film critics. They might all be at odds over a film, yet remain worth heeding in their areas of knowledge.
*climbs up on podium, walks to lectern, taps mic* CLASSIFYING STUFF CAN BE SURPRISINGLY HARD EVEN WHEN IT SEEMS OBVIOUS
a question that is bitterly dividing my household: are feet part of the leg?

One of the worst things about @harvardpress.bsky.social is the way they fly to Australia and force me at gunpoint to keep ordering from the Loeb Classical Library. That's not okay. Or, as Hermione might've said in Ovid's HEROIDES: "arma invidiosa tulisti" ("You carried loathsome weapons").
Calling @grogsgamut.bsky.social, because he knows things about this.
I reckon “consumer preference” here ought to have a superscript asterisk that leads to this note: Productivity has skyrocketed yet wages have plummeted and many people simply can’t afford more expensive goods.

I think my most genuinely unpopular take is that a widely held and genuine consumer preference for cheaper, lower-quality goods, not private equity, is driving the decline in quality of consumer goods like clothing and housewares.
