I think this article is like, 95% on-the-nose. However, there is a very good reason WotC doesn't just scrap OP entirely -- an sizable segment of the mtg buying (and strategy game) audience actively desires "competitive" experiences after the initial onboarding phase. They spend less, but play more.

At this point you should assume any email solicitations are scams unless proven otherwise (especially if they come from gmail or other generic address provider). Also "AI" written scam crap has a specific cadence/pattern that is easy to spot once you see enough of it. It's an easy dunk into spam.
