this is correct, and I don't like socialists making any sort of appeal to the American Revolution

This is a thing I have noticed, especially with people who read a ton of secondary literature but don't engage extensively with primary historical texts. You get a lot of "meta level" knowledge about interpretative frameworks and scholarship, but it doesn't make you conversant with the text itself.
