aws made the industry soft. we're used to them handling all the hard problems and everyone can be a pure product company with 85% margins ai infra is not mature enough for this but everyone is pretending like they can offload the actual work to someone else 1/3

AI safety researchers from Anthropic and OpenAI are conceding that the idea of “alignment” and teaching AI not to do bad things is not working. The Hugging Face incident is breaking people because it’s clear AI models will choose deception and lies to achieve goals with real world consequences.
pnpm 11.10 adds a new _auth setting that ties each registry credential to its host, so a malicious or compromised repo file can't redirect your token to a different server. The release also hardens pnpm deploy, pack-app, and more. socket.dev/blog/pnpm-11...

Why Drizzle ORM couldn't publish new releases on NPM for a month | vlt /vōlt/
Drizzle ORM recently hit a 100 MB limit in the npm registry and couldn't ship new releases for weeks. What is this limit?

"We’ve spent the last two years arguing about models. Which one is smartest, which one writes the cleanest React, which one hallucinates less. That conversation is fine as far as it goes, but it’s missing the other half of the system." New #Radar article by @addyosmani.bsky.social: bit.ly/43fulk0
Agent Harness Engineering
A coding agent is the model plus everything you build around it. Harness engineering treats that scaffolding as a real artifact, and it tightens every time the agent slips.

Why do we so often treat refactoring as a "nice to have" rather than a core engineering discipline? We've all been in situations where we dread opening a specific file because the design is poor, obtuse, and overly complex. But the value of refactoring... 🧵 1/7
Props to @scott.hanselman.com for naming the elephant in the room in big tech. AI coding tools boost senior engineers but create challenges for juniors who lack context to judge outputs. Cutting junior hiring for near-term gains weakens the future pipeline. We’ll need apprenticeship-style paths.

📜 "Date is out, Temporal is in" An article by @wil.to on problems found in the ancient JS Date API and how they are solved in the modern Temporal API 👍 Focuses on immutability and ergonomics of calculations. Love the kicker.
Temporal is the Date system we always wanted in JavaScript. It's extremely close to being available so Mat Marquis thought it would be a good idea to explain exactly what is better about this new JavaScript date system. piccalil.li/blog/date-is...
since LLMs save us time coding we have a lot more time to think since we're thinking about things longer we realize most of our ideas are bad and since most of our ideas are bad we don't ship as much code
somehow made it to the top of hackernews with a blog post probably because it's interactive, and also logging sucks af
I've put off reading Designing Data-Intensive Applications for the past 2-3 years. Finally made the purchase after being made redundant. Here's to keeping myself employed for the next couple of years with improved software design knowledge!
A lot of SaaS companies are between a 1-shot to 1 week effort but charging old cost models, I'm sure people are still paying too. SWEs are the most acutely aware doom-sayers but the rest of the world is unaware of just how much change has been taking place over the past year.
I recently switched from a 8GB RAM MacBook Air to a 36GB M4 Pro. Things become much smoother (literally ship 2x more PRs) but I wish someday I can instead optimize my tools and go back to my 8GB Air :/

v5 of Lingui was just released. We've been working to adopt Lingui at Khan Academy and it's by-far the best i18n library around. The use of macros, SWC integrations, deep React integrations, and idiomatic POT/PO file support makes it a huge win. lingui.dev/blog/2024/11...

I see three distinct phases. Pre-Fox, when opinion was diverse but actual facts were indisputable. Fox/Trump, where objective truth was subjected to the false equivalence of ‘alternative facts’ (ie lies). And now, where media & tech platform owners collude with him to drown out the truth altogether.
It’s time for THE charger. Today, the USB-C becomes officially the common standard for charging new mobile electronic devices in the EU. It means better-charging technology, reduced e-waste, and less fuss to find the chargers you need! #DigitalEU
