NEJM editors highlight 3 aspects of recently proposed rule changes as particularly striking: decisions on research funding would be made by political appointees, funding could be cut off midway through a grant period, and foreign interactions would be limited. Learn more: https://nej.md/43yBIUb

This is what I’ve meant these many years when I refer to EBM fundamentalism or methodolatry, defined as the profane worship of the randomized controlled clinical trial as the only valid method of clinical investigation.
Makary is blocking a treatment for incurable melanoma bc the multiple trials its undergone were not RCTs. The drug is intended for patients for whom other cancer therapies have not worked. An RCT would require a control group to continue to use chemotherapy that previously had not worked for them.

"Defending against emerging diseases is literally a matter of life & death. Our government’s negligence endangers us" I do think RFK Jr & Bhattacharya killing mRNA vaccine R&D, & Bhattacharya killing federal funding for pandemic research & pushing for no preparedness at all, were unforgivable acts
I want to share the new OpEd that @jimalwine.bsky.social and I wrote about the dangerous lack of pandemic preparedness in the United States. It doesn’t matter how the outbreak begins. We are not ready, and the only things we can be sure of are death, taxes, and another pandemic.
