the oil shocks of the 1970s predate social media, the internet, cable television, media conglomeration, deregulation, and wealth distribution was much healthier. historical comparison and analogy can only go so far. the American consumer and economy of today are fundamentally different 50 years on.

I respect this effort but I find it unconvincing. We've *seen* a major price level shock in the US before, during the 1970s. To test what that did to sentiment, we can compare Conference Board consumer confidence data to unemployment/inflation. The result gives a respectable model of confidence. 1/3

The irony of this initiative is that Harvard’s Department of Government was the academic hub of the first generation of neoconservatives and Harvey Mansfield alone has probably produced more conservative undergrad and grad students than all Marxist faculty at Harvard combined.

Harvard Asks Donors to Endow $10 Million Professorships for ‘Viewpoint Diversity’ Initiative | News | The Harvard Crimson

Harvard is quietly asking donors for $10 million gifts to establish new endowed professorships in a sweeping bid to reshape its faculty under the banner of “viewpoint diversity,” according to two peop...

this is partly a reflection of our inability to tax billionaires. sovereign debt is an important aspect of international finance that predates capitalism but the inability to control deficits, the unwillingness to raise revenue, and 15 years of free money has created a very precarious position

The US Treasury market has only grown more dominant in recent decades, exploding in scale while its closest rivals have remained fragmented (the euro area), strictly controlled (China), or largely moribund (Japan). Global investors have no real alternatives:

IF THE PROPHETS broke in through the doors of night
and sought an ear like a homeland -
Ear of mankind, overgrown with nettles, would you hear?
If the voice of the prophets blew
on flutes made of murdered children's bones and exhaled airs burnt with martyrs cries —
if they build a bridge of old men's dying groans -
Ear of mankind occupied with small sounds,
would you hear?

IN THE PRESENCE of eyes which witnessed the slaughter, which saw the oppression the heart could not bear, and as witness the heart that once taught compassion until the days came to pass that crushed human feeling,
I have taken an oath: To remember it all, to remember - not once to forget!
Forget not one thing to the last generation when degradation shall cease, to the last, to its ending, when the rod of instruction shall have come to conclusion.
An oath: Not in vain passed over the night of terror.
An oath: No morning shall see me at flesh-pots again.
An oath: Lest from this we learned nothing

YOU who live secure in your warm houses,
who return at evening to find hot food and friendly faces:
Consider whether this is a man, who labors in the mud who knows no peace
who fights for a crust of bread who dies at a yes or a no.
Consider whether this is a woman, without hair or name
with no more strength to remember eyes empty and womb cold as a frog in winter
Consider that this has been:
I commend these words to you.
Engrave them on your hearts
when you are in your house, when you walk on your way, when you go to bed, when you rise.
Repeat them to your children, or may your house crumble, disease render you powerless,
your offspring avert their faces from you.
Primo LeviMY FATHER, Heinrich (Chaim) Blitzer, owned a huge men's clothing store in Berlin, and he had worked all his life to build up this store — and he told me how his store was looted and utterly destroyed on Kristallnacht. The police hunted for him, my mother and two sisters, to deport them to a concentration camp, but a Righteous Gentile risked his life to hide them in his attic, until my father and mother and sisters were able to emigrate to America in February, 1939. On Kristallnacht, my uncle, Yosef Wassermann, was rounded up with other Jews and deported to a concentration camp, where he was murdered. My grandparents, five aunts and uncles in Berlin, were later deported to concentration camps where they were murdered. My mother was the sole survivor of her family. Shattered like the glass of Kristallnacht was my family.

OUR GRANDFATHER is a survivor of the Holocaust. Our mom taught us about that terrible time in history. We ask our grandpa abour how he felt living in the Lodz ghetto and working in the concentration camp. How did he have the will to survive?
He doesn't talk about the Holocaust very much but we know he thinks about it often.
We leam about the Holocaust in school and we tell our grandpa about what we leam.
We are proud of our grandfather and have learned a lot from him. We will always remember NEVER to FORGET. We will always remember all who perished in the Holocaust and hope that teaching others will help prevent this terrible thing from happening again.

WE WOULD ASSEMBLE in the darkness. To light a candle there, or even a march, would have brought immediate disaster upon us. We spoke about matters of the spine and eternal questions, abour God, abour Jews in the world, about the eternity of Israel. In the midst of the darkness, I sensed light in the unlit room, the light of Torah.I BELIEVE in the sun even when it is not shining.
I believe in love even when feeling it not.
I believe in God even when God is silent.

IF WORRY and despondency seek our undoing, then we should think about Yizkor in such a way that we ... carry on the work of our ancestors from Sinai; in that we today are truly their children, and in that we are parents of the future generations.
Then the chain does not break and we gain the strength to carry out nobly these historical responsibilities, and to thank God sincerely that Yizkor has become the celebration of our soul.

IT WAS the cold winter of 1944, and although we had nothing like calendars, my Ether who was my fellow prisoner there, took me and some of our friends to a corner in our barrack. He announced that it was the eve of Chanukah, produced a curious-shaped clay bowl, and began to light a wick immersed in his precious, but now melted, margarine ration. Before he could recite the first blessing, I protested at the waste of food. He looked at me — then at the lamp — and finally said: "You and I have seen that it is possible to live up to three weeks without food. We once lived almost three days without water; but you cannot live properly for three minutes without hope."
Hugo Gryn
ONE EVENING when we were already resting on the floor of our hur, dead tired, soup bowls in hand, a fellow prisoner rushed in and asked us to run out to the assembly grounds and see the wonderful sunset. Standing outside we saw sinister clouds in the west and the whole sky alive with clouds of ever-changing shapes and colors, from steel-blue to blood red. The desolate grey mud huts provided a sharp contrast, while the puddles on the muddy ground reflected the glowing sky: Then, after minutes of moving silence, one prisoner said to another, "How beauriful the world could be."

dear poaster, I clicked the heart to like your skeet. I then accidentally clicked it again, thus unliking it. please accept my apology. I have clicked it thricely as I did enjoy the random misfiring of your TV-pilled, anti-anxiety meds-addled brain. sincerely, ricky cilantro (dictated not read)

it's hard to get retractions to stick because you can't un-have an emotion. a lot of people developed angry feelings for Chappell Roan over this, and now that they know she didn't actually do it they're even MORE angry at her because they resent being told they repeated wrong information

So once again a man started a wildly successful harassment campaign against a female celebrity who didn’t actually do anything and the internet swallowed it full throated, and the whole thing is revealed to be concocted horseshit he can’t muster anything more than “sorry that happened I guess”

Re: vibecession one factor for me is feeling cheated paying federal taxes. I'm paying a higher rate than every billionaire to fund a gov't that does far less good, and far more harm, than it used to—while running a bigger deficit. I'll pay for USAID, make the billionaires pay for their fascist shit.
