THIS IS WHY WE DON'T LISTEN TO THE CENTRISTS. Alt text version:
Remember this image every time someone tells you that protesters are "hurting their cause." Those people are the red bars. In 40 years, we'll look back at them the same way.
Philadelphia folks, we are retracing the route of the 1976 Bicentennial without Colonies route on Wednesday - join us!
Telling quote from a town hall in small town Northwest PA: “I trust you Mike, but I don’t trust the federal government”
One of the best parts of being a historian? Changing my mind. Sometimes one letter or one newspaper article sends me back to rethink everything I thought I knew. That's not failure. That's good history. 🗃️
A ton of effort is going to go into pretending taxing rich people doesn’t work just like a lot of work went into immediately ignoring and getting rid of that expanded child tax credit once it was revealed it worked way better than expected
Massachusettes "Millionaires Tax", which was targeted to fund transportation and education, has been a resounding success. It has funded FREE school lunch for ALL students, FREE buses in lowest income communities (people can get to work, etc.), and FREE community college. And "exodus" was minimal.
Excerpt from a 1969 Philadelphia Tribune article about a community meeting discussing concerns about police: 1
If you have so much work to do that you feel you need AI in order to get it all done: you don't. You need a union.
Tomato season is upon us. These are just some of the ripe Sungold ones.
The effective federal corporate income tax rate: 1950: 50% 1990: 25% 2020: 13% Stop asking "but how we will pay for it?" Restore the corporate tax rate. That is how we will pay for it.
It’s exhausting that my almost-to-the-finish-line book manuscript about multiracial community activism between the 1960s and 1980s becomes more relevant by the day. One chapter traces 2 decades of resistance to shuttering Head Start programs in Philadelphia. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/31/u...
Trump Administration Plans to Upend Head Start by Deregulating It (Gift Article)
The White House tried but failed to block funding for preschool for poor children. Instead, it will seek to strip away standards on health, literacy — and brushing teeth.

I am stunned to hear of the passing of the fierce, brilliant and principled scholar activist Johanna Fernandez. Johanna's scholarship will endure. She was a gem and the world is worse for her no longer being here. Rest in power, comrade.
I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

The guy that they want you to be terrified of (Mamdani) is making sure kids in NYC are fed all summer and people have access to cheaper groceries, all while they take food away from kids getting SNAP. Just sayin, feeding kids should make you the good guy.
Surely the solution here is just *don't use AI tools* for your writing and research and continue to do your writing and research in ALL the ways you were doing it before you started using AI instead of doing the work??
Spinning my periodic broken record: Poll-sniffers need to internalize how *incredibly* shallow public opinion on most topics is. Last week’s Gallup results are not a snapshot of the immutable General Will. The modal voter will flip on most questions after a ten minute conversation if you… have one.
Fox News poll: Which political party -- the Democrats or the Republicans -- do you think would do a better job on immigration? 50% say Democrats 49% say Republicans *Quite* a turnaround after Dems got destroyed on immigration politics in 2024; it is (was?) Trump’s best issue.
Friends, it would be so much easier if we lived in a society where we ensured everyone had a baseline of needs met and used progressive taxation instead of any cumbersome “means” or “only the deserving” tests that come up in our scarcity-model & bigoted fever dreams.
Anne is my go to copyeditor. I have worked with her on books, zines etc. She's professional, timely and a good partner. I highly recommend her services.
Periodic reminder that I would love to line edit or copyedit your nonfiction books about building a better world or understanding the world with an eye toward liberation. Organizing books, academic books, books in the interstices...
I will gladly donate money to any credible challenger who wants to primary John Fetterman.

Citizens Bank parts ways with two prison operators amid ICE protests - The Boston Globe
Citizens said the end of its relationships with GEO Group and CoreCivic was driven by changing financial needs of the two clients, not by protests.

It’s worth noting that Taco Bell identified the source before the FDA did, and promptly pulled it from their stores. The FDA didn’t even name the source until Taylor Farms outed themselves, and hasn’t issued a recall. Basically, Taco Bell is now a more reliable authority than the FDA.
Taylor Farms, which supplies major fast food and grocery chains, was identified as the possible source of the cyclosporiasis outbreak Thursday.
Leave my boy Taco Bell out of it, it was bitch ass Taylor Farms, the world's largest salad processor. Fight the real enemy Big Salad
Next Friday will mark *17* years since the last increase in the federal minimum wage.
Truly baffling how so many people seem oblivious to toxic air
can’t breathe the air can’t drink the water can’t eat the food, finally the capitalist utopia is complete
