The whole essay that Emily Wilson wrote really demonstrates how much people only see packaging and can't analyze arguments. Her opinion is valid! It's not any kind of analysis though.

The thing about a lot of women, is that they very much want to convince you that they are better than men. But men aren't a separate species, and many women do exactly the same as them, when they are in position to exercise power over someone.

What I find interesting, and have yet to see a discussion about is Elliot Page in the Odyssey. This may have been a neutral casting decision, but it doesn't feel like it is. He wasn't the hero, or the villain, but the sacrifice.

I have zero patience for cis women nonsense anymore as you can tell.

I actually really like Emily Wilson's work, which is good, but this girl bossing of her is extremely irritating. I would like to continue appreciating her work, but that's going to mean ignoring all the shallow who are only interested in the yelling at men aspect of feminism.

So I finally watched The Seventh Seal (1957), and it was not what I expected. It was really goofy and there was very little chess playing.

I've been watching MAGA types arguing about the "true" Odyssey as if it were the Bible. Few of these guys would really consider themselves religious, don't go to church, never read the Bible (or the Odyssey) but what they cling to is that framework of understanding the world.

The biggest trap with making something complicated understandable to someone with no grounding in the subject, only propaganda, is that people want to make things "easier" to understand..

A cultural shift is much harder, takes much longer, and requires laying down the foundation of certain ideas before even starting to tackle this concept, because people literally cannot see it because they've been trained not to.

I noticed two references now to a movie I had never heard about before, and I know a fair amount about movies so it really caught my attention. I'm talking about Andrei Tarkovsky’s Andrei Rublev (1966).

I've started reading the blog of this guest after listening to this episode, because Catholicism holds a certain kind of reverence for me that I can't quite explain, even though I don't believe in God really or Jesus at all and was brought up in a lapsed Protestant family.

This is why the "scary trans man in the women's bathroom" is such a failure, and also why trans people themselves cling to this idea themselves.

Transphobes see what is happening now as the fault of trans people because by not being at constant war with ourselves, they think then they have to do it instead. They would much rather feel safe in their own gender knowing we are self flagellating in the dark.

I've noticed a shift in movies, and for me it started with The Green Knight and burst out into popular consciousness with The Odyssey. It's not only a shift in masculine stories either, because the other movie that immediately connects for me is The Testament of Anne Lee

Transitioning was not about making my life easier. It's harder, at least if you discount me being a person with interiority. I am with myself 100% of the time, and I have the ability to police my own thoughts as well as behaviors to prevent me from transitioning to the highest degree.

Just got back from Nolan's The Odyssey and it is, words are hard to describe, but stunning, amazing. This is the accumulation of Nolan's work. It is The Northman by way of Dunkirk.

As a transmasc, when you are sacrificing yourself for nothing in return, that cost you think is inconsequential, is burdened onto those that come after you.

This is for transmascs: what I've learned because I am a parent. Giving of yourself was what you learned, because you learned you were never enough. When you are sacrificing all of yourself in penance, it is not a cost that is born by you alone.

Biology is an interest of mine, so I know a fair amount, but I don't want to speak authoritatively about it, but this is why the binary sex model is bad actually for science too.

YES THIS IS WHY WE SAY THAT A MULTIVARIATE MODEL OF SEX IS BETTER BECAUSE IT ALLOWS FOR EXACTLY THIS SORT OF THING because the phenotypes associated with reproduction are each being acted on by multiple evolutionary pressures and aren't all simply downstream consequences of gamete size!!!

I remember watching the Temple Grandin movie, about the autistic woman who designs a more humane way to slaughter cattle. There is a scene where she can create in her mind a mental map of what the mechanics of a gate are...
