Growing up gay in 1980s Texas, I took for granted I’d always have to be vigilant in public for any homophobic reaction. Now, today in Massachusetts, I rarely think about being gay in public at all. That’s what I want for trans people. Not just tolerance. Feeling safe enough to let down the guard.
