An #earthquake of magnitude 6.8 happened close to Kumamoto in the island of Kyushu (SW Japan). Japan is prone to frequent subduction earthquakes, but in this case, the shallow hypocenter depth and strike-slip mechanism imply a rupture in the upper plate. ⚒️ 🧪

Yesterday afternoon 14:09 in Lacanau Océan in France. A pale red sun through the smoke tinged everything in Mars style orange. Welcome in the climate emergency! Despite all denial of the fossil fuel lobby, it’s scientific fact: CO2 emissions heat up Earth & make fires worse. 🔥🔥🔥

The areas affected by the #Fontainebleau forest #wildfires (3 Pignons and Faisanderie fires) are highly visible – in dark brown and red – on the Sentinel-2 satellite image @esa.int @copernicusland.bsky.social from July 20, 2026 👇. Over 10% of the Fontainebleau forest has been burned. ⚒️ 🧪

⚒️ 🧪 A catastrophic earthquake just struck northern Venezuela. Large buildings have collapsed, and the USGS PAGER is forecasting thousands of fatalities. Our colleague in Caracas, Dr. Frank Audemard, has shared with us what the earthquake felt like and footage from the region. Here’s what we know.

Catastrophic M7.5 earthquake strikes northern Venezuela

Severe damage; collapsed buildings; significant fatalities possible

Geoscope @ipgp.bsky.social modeled the #Venezuela doublet as a single #earthquake with a long complex source time function 👇 with magnitude Mw 7.8, quite large. Together with other prelim. seismological analyses (thread below) it suggests a ~200km long rupture on the E-W El Pilar Fault. ⚒️ 🧪 - 1/n

France will be at the epicenter of the most significant heat anomaly on the planet over the next few days. The sheer extent of the country that could experience temperatures above 40°C is nothing short of astonishing.

Bild

Can you see the anomaly 👇 ? On temperature forecasts for Tuesday France has same colour than the belt of deserts in Africa and Arabia. Not normal. We are in a #climate emergency. And our politics are denying or minimising the problem because "it's the economy, stupid", to enrich the rich ☠️

A map of the Earth showing eastern hemisphere. Colours corresponding to extreme temperatures, 40°C and over, cover all desert areas in Africa and Arabia plus France and Spain

40-42°C is 104-108°F. Like at the Grand Canyon www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026... But the buildings in France suck for such temperature - too much concrete, too little shade & insulation, wrong orientation of windowed facades. Ignorance? Or done to maximize sale of nuclear electricity in winter...

Grand Canyon on ‘extreme heat’ watch, with temperatures set to soar

Temperatures could top 111F on Monday and Tuesday, after several recent deaths in park raise concerns over heat

No comment 😱 👇 (forecasts for next Monday) We are in a #climate emergency.

I had the opportunity for a quick tour of the (relatively) new rock mechanics lab at the USGS Moffett Field campus. The work they do to understand earthquake physics at small scale of a block of granite is mind boggling.

Five people in a laboratory standing around a large, flat slab of stone with an array of sensors and wires arranged diagonally across the square slab.

After the remarkable account of the 2023 tsunami and seiche in N Greenland, another astonishing article that resembles a forensic examination 👇. A wide range of analytical methods to study a monster #tsunami within an Alaskan fjord. Fascinating. Kudos @watershedlab.bsky.social and co-authors !
