So much of the infrastructure we are rebuilding once existed. Los Angeles once had a sprawling network of passenger light rail that extended from Santa Monica to San Bernardino.

In the mid-20th century, auto and oil interests bought up electric streetcar systems across the US and systematically replaced them with bus routes and paved roads, funneling commuters toward private cars.
Bordeaux, France, has now recorded more days above 40°C in 2026 alone than during the entire 105-year period from 1920 (when observations began) to 2025. This is deeply shocking.
But hey, cars are more profitable to capital than public transit, so by god we will be made to keep producing them. The planet, and our brains, be damned.
Why is AC so rare in much of Europe? Well, until recently it simply wasn't hot enough to need it. Here is the average number of days above 30C (86F) for major cities over time:

Very damaging earthquakes in Venezuela. @judithgeology.bsky.social provides a preliminary summary of what may have been a M7.2 and M7.5 doublet - or a complex rupture. Scientifically, this will be hard to untangle because later P/S arrivals will overlap the wavefield from the first event.

Can you see the anomaly 👇 ? On temperature forecasts for Tuesday France has same colour than the belt of deserts in Africa and Arabia. Not normal. We are in a #climate emergency. And our politics are denying or minimising the problem because "it's the economy, stupid", to enrich the rich ☠️

You know what's much better for the environment? Designing places and transportation systems so people don't need a car at all.
Jalopnik@jalopnik.bsky.social · 2mo agoStudies show that getting the minerals to make an EV battery is bad for the environment, but driving a gas-powered car is far worse.
Today I explored Hellerup, a Copenhagen suburb, and took the long way back to the city. I saw lots of examples of neighborhoods with single family homes and wide arterial roads that wouldn't be out of place in the US. All of them still had ample bike infrastructure that made the trip safe and easy.
The joke also works if you imagine he's talking about cars.

Since 10 June 2026, #Etna 's tallest summit crater, the Voragine ("big mouth") is producing small Strombolian explosions (ejection of incandescent lava fragments) and ash emissions. Seen here on the evening of 13 June 2026 from northeast. Latest activity here was five months ago.
