I like the party favours but I hate the party people.

Remember, however dismissive you feel about Jelly XO and Bunnie Roll and omg they’re getting divorced, that’s how your parents felt about Axl Rose and April Lavigne.

If you think there was outrage for Christopher Nolan casting a Black woman as Helen of Troy and a Trans man as Sinon Just wait till they figure out what the movie was actually about Oooooh boy

1. The EC ethos has always been, count every vote possible, make it as easy to vote as possible. 2. If staff had to say to someone's face, No, you're not on the roll, you can't vote, they were going to get abused. I'm not working this election, and I really feel for the people who are.

Let me take a minute to tell you how bonkers this is. The first election I worked was (I think) 2008, before there was really any advance voting. At every election, if you weren't on the roll, we let you cast a special vote and then worked out if you were eligible afterwards. Two reasons: 1/2

The Electoral Commission has told staff to turn away voters who aren't on the printed roll and who say they're unenrolled, but has no plans to count how many people will be affected. newsroom.co.nz/2026/08/03/t...

some mornings it’s barely worth the trouble to wake up, roll over, gnaw through the straps, wriggle into your uniform, raise both fists, and shout “Hail Hydra!”

I don't have a hot take on data centers, but I have several years of research on one (the Facebook/Meta data center complex in Prineville, Oregon). The more I research current trends, the more I think that one was a kind of goldilocks deal, the exception to the rule ...

Hassett: "Data centers are very good for towns bc they create so many jobs & bring people in with high incomes that can buy houses & stuff like that. So if you take a sleepy town that hasn't seen much in the last 30 years & put a data center there, there are gonna be a bunch of happy residents."

I’d love to know what people outside the industry think “data centre” actually means, because no one I know expects them to contain any jobs at all. As someone who has built several: any employee is a design flaw.

One great outcome of the LLM era was that the term “guard rails” became utterly meaningless, so much so that local authorities had to replace signs and railings at scenic lookouts.

it brings me great joy that Hamburg’s Data Privacy Commissioner is also called Thomas Fuchs, and is angry about many of the same things.

And, for an instant, she stared directly into those soft blue eyes and knew, with an instinctive mammalian certainty, that the exceedingly rich were no longer even remotely human.

It will surprise absolutely no one that Apple’s HomeKit, Shortcuts and Night Shift features all have wildly different ideas about what time “sunset” is.

Dunno if you need to hear this today, but both Melissa Etheridge (Memphis Rock and Soul) and Cyndi Lauper (Memphis Blues) have released spectacular albums of blues covers that approximately no one knows about. Available everywhere fine music is streamed without paying the artist a goddamn thing.

Today I am thankful for the unnamed mesoamerican genius who looked at the extremely unpromising seeds of a cacao tree and thought “I bet I can turn that into something that’ll change your life.”
