Also the experience of air travel has got worse in some respects but the price has gone down massively and the number of routes increased a lot. Consumers' revealed preference was to be treated like cattle in return for much more regular and cheap flights.

I think this mostly indicates that too many people are being sentenced for too long. If we don't need to worry so much about someone being released early because their enormous sentence was "merely" for fraud, drugs or the like then we probably don't need to gaol them for so long.

James Ball@jamesrball.com · 3mo agoUK supermarket profit margins average less than 4%. That's *incredibly* narrow and among the best in the world for consumers. The average branch of Lidl, for example, makes just £130 in profit per day. Food is expensive 'cos costs are high, not because retailers are slapping huge margins on it.
British politicians' eternal vigilance against non-existent supermarket price gouging is amazing, given the number of *real* exploitative business practices there are out in the world that go entirely unpunished. They know it's not happening, too, they just also know it's popular to claim it is.
