New paper alert!! This project has been a favorite idea in the lab for many, many years! So excited to see this out. Huge congratulations to first author @gwelsh.bsky.social on her awesome work!

So excited to share our new work out in @evolletters.bsky.social today! doi.org/10.1093/evle... Sexual signals and preferences for them often differ across groups, contributing to reproductive isolation. But how do new signals evolve if females already have preferences for existing ones? (1/4)

This is a five-alarm fire 🔥 for US science 🧪. (We keep saying that, but it keeps being true 😭.) Trump and Musk are blocking *ALL* NIH grants ‼️ by "exploiting a loophole in the process"—stopping study sections & council meetings. Every biomedical researcher in the country should be screaming. 1/

NEW: The Trump administration is exploiting a loophole to keep funding frozen at the NIH - a move that some legal scholars say is illegal. Federal Register notices are blocked, so no grant-review sessions can be scheduled. All the gritty details here, and a short 🧵: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

This is an attack on US science. NSF staff provide critical support for scientific infrastructure and global excellence. These are valuable dedicated public servants. Please contact your reps, write letters, make noise! Are there any plans for rallies at NSF headquarters? Journalists: COVER THIS!

Please let the GEO/EAR community know: Program Directors and Mission Support who’ve been at NSF under two years were just terminated via Zoom. Even those of us whose offer letter stated one probationary year and whose government data states “permanent”.

NEW: NSF confirmed that they fired 168 employees today, out of their staff of ~1,500 feds. This includes some people who'd finished their 1-year probationary periods, which were extended to 2-years last month without explanation. More to come.

Since I have way more non-academic followers than I ever would have imagined: a short explainer. TL;DR: Substantially cutting indirect costs will either mean raising tuition and fees, or laying off a bunch of mid- and low-salary staff and students.

I've posted it several times but the deadline is this Friday: encourage undergraduate students you're working with to apply to this fantastic program! We've got amazing researchers and opportunities in organismal biology, biology education, applied ecology, evolutionary ecology and more!
