if I may just be proud of myself for a moment: I got a Distinction in my PGdip. it ultimately doesn't matter but I worked really hard and it's nice to see it reflected in results.

My cousin organized a series of masked concerts in NYC so immunocompromised and other covid-conscious folks can still enjoy live music events, and is raising funds so he can keep doing so! Love and appreciation to anyone able to chip in 🙏🏾♥️ www.kickstarter.com/projects/pos...

Sure, the world may be falling apart, but don't you let that stop you from being kind. Don't let it stop you from making new friends, brewing backyard rum, or joining the spirits who float through the forest at midnight.

"In 1942, the British arrested the leaders before dawn, believing a movement dies when its leaders are taken. It did not Modi-Shah's playbook is the same: close the roads, call it illegal, detain ppl.. If any of us is stopped tomorrow, the one standing beside us carries it on" x.com/neha_aisa/st...

To my generation, There comes a moment in the life of every generation when it must choose between comfort and conscience. For us, that moment has come again. In July, we stepped out onto the streets and a union minister resigned. We have done this before. In 1942, the British arrested the leade…

I had a productive day today including a trip out just for purposes of going out. I'm sure I'll be tired tomorrow but it's a nice change from "too fatigued to even think". tidying and cleaning sorted out travel plans cooked dinner email clearing lunch out

Anne Carson is only the 19th woman out of 123 Lit Nobel Laureates & there are as many men named Patrick who’ve won (2) as Black women (1), Asian woman (1), and Latinas (0) combined. So go read some Maryse Conde, Jamaica Kincaid, Yoko Ogawa, Ling Ma, Isabel Allende, an embarrassment of riches really

was sat at a cafe reading @chanda.blacksky.app The Edge of Space-Time and became aware of a 3yr old watching me quietly. so I started reading out loud and they seemed quite content. I hope one day they'll be in school physics class and think "wait have i heard about wave function before?!"

we really need, as a population, to get over this idea that "discomfort" equals "i'm in danger". does being a visible minority in a place, exorcism when you're used to not being a minority, cause discomfort. yes. OK. let's take some time to reflect on that and learn and not just say "Unsafe!"

I’m sorry, but the only people getting worked up about places like Leicester and Luton having minority white populations are racists who don’t see non-white people as fellow citizens. Those people should be loudly & frequently told to get in the bin.

also maybe it's just my subset of acquaintances. but year round all I ever hear is "I know everybody prefers summer but I actually prefer autumn/winter" I rarely hear people say that they prefer summer. (except for other people with SAD)

I get pretty severe seasonal depression so no amount of cosy clothing and hot drinks will make me like this time of year more than summer. sorry. doesn't mean I don't like those autumnal and wintery things. but the lack of daylight can do one.

Noticing the nights drawing in? 🌙 October brings a big shift, with most of the UK losing over 2 hours of daylight this month. Do you enjoy the cosy evenings or miss the longer days?

I love it when researchers develop a particular bee in their bonnet about some aspect of the subject they're researching. they go into it just willing to learn all about the topic and come out going "ok but that guy. that one guy!" and now they just want us all to join them in their vendetta.

Lingthusiasm has been a favourite of mine since 2019. I'm not a linguist but I love learning more about how languages and communication work and I really like how Gretchen and Lauren give a global perspective of linguistics including sign language. definitly worth a listen

Hey. The fragmentation of the social media landscape has been hard on indie #scicomm 🧪 projects So if you'd like to follow a podcast that's enthusiastic about #linguistics, could you check out @lingthusiasm.com? And if you think your followers might like to, could you give this a repost?

it's half past six on a Sunday why are half the people on this train so drunk they can't figure out how a train toilet works?! ok maybe not half, but I've had to shut the door for two separate guys who couldn't figure out the door close and were ready to just stay pissing wildly.

90 years ago, on the 4th of October 1936, antifascist counter protesters stopped a British Union of Fascists march through London’s East End. The Metropolitan Police tried to clear the way for the fascists resulting in violent clashes known as the Battle of Cable Street. #otd #history 🗃️

The mounted police conduct a charge against the dense crowd to clear the way to Cable Street.

I'm progressing so slowly through this. partly my concentration had been atrocious recently, but also it is not designed to allow for rapid reading and smooth process. I'm at page 118* and it's starting to get a bit "choose your own advertising adventure" in terms of flow. *ish

I'm going it. I'm going in! (I've started this previously and DNF'd because it's literally so difficult to hold and physically read for me. any tips for reading chonky books appreciated) #reading #booksky
