i thought twitch was losing money, was never profitable? that's why they needed the 50% cut, why the streams are littered with ads, why there's twitch-led sponsorships, why amazon has to keep it afloat. so why is being the 7 year CPO of this apparently failing company a good thing for whatnot?

Twitch's Former Chief Product Officer says the Discovery and Ads teams were once at war over Feed impressions (solved), and that Twitch streams with fewer than 1000 viewers are dead weight (since entertainment economics runs on ad rates). Very interesting historical insight!

The comparison to his Twitch years is the sharpest part. At Twitch, a stream under a thousand viewers was dead weight, because entertainment economics run on CPMs — ad rates per thousand viewers. On Whatnot, a seller with 50 people in a stream is like a shoe-store owner with 50 people in the shop: "you'd literally never shut down the store." He felt the cultural difference in his second week, when a seller complained on camera that the seven-second "sudden death" auction timer was too slow and wanted three seconds. Two engineers in the office heard it, changed a config in real time, and told the seller to refresh the app. "I'm with my people," he remembers thinking.

In Alpine Lake redecorating is easy, and doesn't require hoarding resources and crafting 1000's of new items. styles are unlocked and you're free to redecorate as much as you like. Also I noticed players used wooden flooring to make paths around their inns. now pathing is a full fledged feature!

I found out about the Flock CEO's personal emails to law enforcement agencies across the country from police departments I had consulted about cybersecurity, as they reached out to warn me about his dangerous language regarding my videos.

also now everything quixel is in this massive archive that i had to script to search for consistently. depending on where you search on fab you may or may not find it. i search the store, i find it listed as in my library. i search my library, it's not there. observation makes the assets disappear.

as a long time user of unreal engine i like to complain a lot to make myself feel less stupid for a bit. we had quixel pro before epic. the migration was awful. quixel is an archive now. nothing is updated. everything is through fab. my 20mb mesh is stuck in a queue behind a 10gb download. hi btw.

whoever at epic designed this genius way of viewing a page on the fab store from the unreal launcher. i mean. ooooh. i just want to shake them by the- well, let's start with wanting to shake them vigorously and go from there. we went from dogfooding to dogshitting, didn't we? details in alt text.

A screenshot of how Unreal Engine launcher users access the Fab.com store by default inside the Unreal Engine launcher - which is where all our assets are. Hark! at the fact that clicking on a page doesn't take you to an asset page, but instead pops up a narrow modal on the right where you can imbue next to no information without scrolling down all the way because it's condensed all the information into a narrow modal! See those three symbols on the top right? Well, just to save you time, the right two do the same fucking thing! Yes, that's right, close and collapse have no functional difference! Because why the fuck would they. No misclicking for you! No, because all OUR buttons have exactly the same purpose! And don't you worry, game devs! Because if you thought it was a pain having TWO buttons doing exactly the same thing, here's what happens when you click into a screenshot! That's right, now you get NO buttons? How do you get out? Great question? Apparently you just click fucking randomly until it closes or something, because there's no good reason for it to work, and work consistently, right? We don't need consistency in UX design. No, what we need is to throw crumbs to all the people who used the old store FOR A FUCKING DECADE and who asked very nicely for it to go back to how it was an be usable in the launcher. Which, to be fair, they did. But in what could only be described as an Epic fucking power move, they took it upon themselves to make it one quarter as functional as it used to be!

there's also other integrations that make me realise how heavily pipeline dependent i am right now. they can mostly all fall into the nice to have category at the moment, or the scrape some shit together for internal use category. but having external tools at some point is a must.

i also need to probably write a rider integration. i just can't go back to visual studio + resharper. i just can't.

been trying out @stride3d.bsky.social in my spare time. it's kinda refreshing to be able to write my own stuff again rather than rely on the unreal gameplay framework. i don't know if anything will come of it, because i'd have to write a lot of pipeline scripts, but it's not unenjoyable. :)

Apple has closed down the first of its US stores to unionize. Over half of the 70 unionized workers at the Towson, MD store are losing their jobs. The union says Apple is retaliating after it only offered transfers to workers at the two nonunion stores it also closed.
