Being a councillor is a tough, all-consuming job (if you are doing it right) except you get paid an allowance, as if you are a part time volunteer. It was a thankless job before, but Badenoch somehow made it more so.
It is rare (or should be) for someone to become an MP without working up through the local system. Badenoch did not. She was a London assembly member without a specific constituency on a £56k salary. Ordinary local govt probably seemed beneath her.
The overall contempt Westminster Tories hold for their LA colleagues revealed.
Well that's a vote of confidence for all Tory councillors.
