So many boxes in this paragraph. From my dieselpunk fantasy WIP. Faye contemplates what cargo the Vespertine crew might be carrying. #WIPSnips #writesky #writingprompts #writingcommunity

Slowly, she got to her feet and made a circle around the boxes, searching for perhaps the tenth time for some sort of signal, but they were just plain brown crates, something that fruit might be shipped in. She leaned forward, placing her hands on one of the boxes as she sniffed the air. No smell. She tapped the side of the box and got nothing, then shook it a little and thought she heard something like the tinkling of glass, which brought her back to thinking it might be moonshine or some other alcohol stored in jars and bottles. But would they be this shady about sending alcohol to the troops?

Another thought that occurred to her was body parts. That wasn't something she was seriously going to entertain; there was nothing about the transport signaling it to be true. For one, she thought that the crates and the ship would have to be kept cool to store bodies correctly, and Fontaine had not mentioned anything about temperature control. And if there were body parts, being in the warm cargo hold so close to the engine would have surely caused a stench.

“Stone?”
“Unit of measurement, don’t worry about it,” Cook says as he slides a glass of orange juice towards me.
“Fair enough.” I eat breakfast in silence, savouring each bite. It’s exactly what I needed.
“Lunch isn’t for a few more hours, so if you’re not looking to interrupt the class, are you going to try out the thing from yesterday again?”
“No. I feel uneasy about something. Going to check out the treeline for a bit. Everything is still closed up tight, right?” I ask.
“Oh yes! I can open this back door right here, but nothing else. You good to go out alone?” His voice carries a lot of concern for my safety.
“I think so, with these new guns of mine,” I say, and I have to fight so hard not to laugh at his frown, and again when his expression changes to irritation when I hold up my arms and flex my fingers.
“Don’t get too cocky just yet,” he continues gruffly, “you’re only just scratching the surface of what a Draakkin can do!”
“Alright dad, but I still have to check the treeline for anything I find either suspicious or troubling, cause that’s my job,” I say with a smile and walk towards the back door. He unlocks and holds it open for me.

Danny and I down some water bottles--I'm a fan of Crystal Geyser, not so much of Fiji water--and pack the rest into the BOX the grocery store gave us to carry them all. I transform into a muscle-bound, weight-lifting champion version of myself and haul the BOX out of the apartment.

"Well, now I feel like a wimp," he says.

"Feel free to take an end."

"No, no, I wouldn't want to infringe on a woman's right to carry a heavy BOX."

“I only went once,” the doctor replied stiltedly. It was not a happy memory.

“What happened?”

“It’s a depressing story. You won’t like it.”

“Why not?” asked the vampire tentatively. “Did someone… hurt you?”

“Nothing like that.”

Dr Edwards scowled. He had vowed never to share anything personal again, least of all with Kenneth Dolpuc.

“I’m going to need a stronger drink if we’re opening this particular box of leeches,” he said reluctantly.

“Ah, they’ve arrived! Just in time!. Now students, you will be divided down the middle with regards to accommodation. Girls will climb the right, my right, stairs and find the right hallway, where your rooms will be. Boys will do the same up my left. There are a few basement rooms for any of you that desire such a room instead.” I’m left wondering who’d really prefer a room in a basement, but I see two of the kids visibly relax at the suggestion. One is Goran and the other is, I think, a girl, but is more accurately just a nearly obscuring waterfall of straight black hair almost down to the floor, with one narrow slit revealing one side of a very pale face and a green eye.

🧛‍♂️ A Gentleman's Tour of the Empire 🦇 Edwards comes up with a practical solution to Kenneth's blood problem, tests it on himself without the proper equipment and makes a tricky-to-explain mess. #wipsnips #writingprompts

Kenneth considered for a moment, then took the bucket and tipped its contents out the window into the bushes below. Some droplets hit the ledge, but not enough to be noticeable. Then he gingerly used the mop handle to lift the sheep intestines and flicked those out of the window too.

“What are you doing?” Edwards baulked. “They’ll be spotted by the first person who walks past!”

“Relax; they won’t!” Kenneth replied cheerfully, peering out through the glass pane at where they had landed in a knotty mess on top of the hedge. “Newpier has a most efficient system for dealing with waste. Wait for it!”

There was a joyous screech, and then another. Something grey-white streaked across the window, and suddenly the hedge was a riot of flat feet and feathers. A pair got hold of one of the tubes and swallowed from each end, tipping back their heads until their beaks met in the middle and clacked together.

“Aww, how romantic,” the vampire grinned. “Seagull kisses.”

"Haven't you read all the books by now?" Daisy asks at the door to
the library.

"Hardly. It'd take a lifetime to read them all, not even doing anything else. And I've been doing all sorts of things. Like training. And turnover. And feasting. And running through the snow. And climbing trees. Totally not reading."

"Okay, okay. I'll be standing out here in the hall. Where I spend half my life," she says pointedly.

"Or, here's a thought! Go, RELAX." I roll my eyes. That probably means beating some poor Natura guard in the sparring ring or bench pressing or whatever, which sounds awful to me. But she'd like it. "I'm going to be here for hours. Safe behind the threshold. Nothing's going to happen to me in the library."

She frowns, twiddling her fingers along her staff the way she does
when she's afraid of breaking protocol. "I do have to report to Mom..."

I laugh, shaking my head. "That's not RELAXING, Daisy."

"Maybe I'll get in a run while I'm waiting?" She says it like it's a question.

"Daytime just started." Most planets have time zones, but not Set. Since the sky is invisible to us anyway, the whole planet is on the same clock, which matches with the Capitol's time over on Zeus.

We exit the station into Penhasco proper. The city is built into a crevasse, mined centuries ago and domed to keep the good air inside. Unlike other places, Set doesn't bother with illusory ceilings pretending to be the sky above the Mezzo. The ceiling is either gray or filled with a colorful display of advertisements and news where organizations have paid for them to be. The lower in the dome, the more ads, since an onlooker's eye is more likely to be caught by the lower ads. I suspect they're more expensive too.

"This whole planet is like one giant ship, isn't it?" Max asks, watching the pseudo-sky with interest. "All enclosed, messages available on screens instead of on the CII--"

"No, they're on the CII, too. If the company can afford it."

"--Canned air, lighting based on what the area needs. You must have felt right at home on the Kinnara."

"Oh, yeah, it was exactly the same. Also, I adore being in space."

“Certainly not!” Edwards snapped reflexively. “What are you trying to imply?”
Nothing that isn’t true. Not that it matters in your case.

“I’m not implying, I’m asking. It’s not an unreasonable question. You’re getting on to still be a bachelor, you assist men other doctors would condemn and you invite me into your room instead of having our conversation in a public place, despite knowing who I am.”

Dr Edwards was struck by a wild urge to tell him everything.

“What am I supposed to say to that?”
“Something hateful, ideally. It will help me feel less guilty later if I’m obliged to let Jo eat you. Are you sure I can’t persuade you to lend me that book?”

Edwards almost laughed but managed to catch himself in time.

"Guys," the Cheetah says. "If we could deal with the problem at hand?"

The Kangaroo chooses that moment to throw an elbow into his chest. The Cheetah stumbles back and loses his grip on her, which gives her enough freedom to punch the Hyena in the throat and sweep her leg behind the Crocogator's own legs, taking him down. Before the Kangaroo can punch attack her, the Eagle is smart enough to take off and regroup from the air--a move I approve of, having used it many times.

The villain doesn't waste a second to make a sprint for the exit. The Cheetah springs into action, pouncing on her back and shoving her into the ground. My instincts have me ready to ASSIST him with a shift to a lightning-quick martial artist or an oversized sumo wrestler, before Dr. Nguyen grabs my arm and pulls me into the office.

Right. Civilian. No battles for Evie.

Edwards was smiling at him. His face was flushed from the climb, and his hair and clothes were rumpled. Kenneth’s eyes flickered to his lips.

This was neither the time nor the place. If the other man rejected him, it would be a very long, awkward descent before they could get away from one another. The sensible thing to do would be to leave the lighthouse, dash back to the Selkie in the rain, lose their coats, which would be soaked by then, and drop hints over dinner.

But getting Doctor Edwards down the ladder proved a lengthy exercise. He gingerly probed with one foot for the first rung, which cracked under his boot.

“It’s alright, it’s alright, just find the next one down!” said Kenneth.

“Don’t patronise me.”

He laughed and DASHED out across the field, his arms spread as if he might take flight like a bird. But his feet stayed on the snow as he ran, not even leaving footprints behind. I was a bit scared to venture forward, knowing that my presence would put a dent in the landscape. The snow was deeper here, so I'd leave a waist-deep channel.

Jack circled back, scooped some snow in his hands, and tossed it at me. It hit my shoulder, and I stood there for a second, shocked still. It wasn't until he gathered more snow and turned to me with a huge smile on his face--perhaps, the closest to joy I've ever seen from him--that I realized this was some sort of Winter game. So, when the next one flew at me, I ducked it and plowed into the snow at my side, getting much colder and wetter than a ball of snow would've gotten me.

Jo had no hesitation in accepting both their hospitality and their help. She drank their wine and entertained them on their grand piano in the evenings, making herself at home in a way that Kenneth would never have the nerve to. She took particular pains to ingratiate herself with Captain Pollock’s wife, who was herself an Eilbreen citizen and mother to a growing young family.

“So clever!” Jo exclaimed admiringly when one of the Pollock toddlers attempted to count along with a fishing rhyme she was singing to them and got all the way to four. “That’s very early to be starting your numbers- and walking already too! You’ll grow up to be a scholar, I can tell.”

The Pollock-Mars, like most new parents, were easily charmed by hearing their children praised. Even more so by a guest with seemingly limitless energy and enthusiasm for amusing little ones. Jo sang to the toddlers, stacked bricks with them, and wove them each a daisy chain for their hair. Though her youngest was unweaned, Mrs Mar confided that she was already expecting another, and offered Jo several fine silk dresses which she would not be able to squeeze into again before they went out of style.

The Grands are on Uncle Huck's balcony, drinking tea, when I arrive at the nursing home.

"Blakely McCallister, what brings you here?" Aunt Agatha says.

She adjusts her glasses like they'll let her see Ren. "And did you bring us Laurie today?"

"Aunt Agatha, you know he goes by Ren now," I say, while Ren whizzes around me, waving his hands and shaking his head. "And that he's part of the Blake package, like he was with Gram."
"Ah, right. Don't expect an old woman to remember every little detail. In my day, we didn't correct our elders on occult matters."

"How would you know?" Uncle Huck chuckles. "Our elders didn't know one whit about the occult. Blake, your great-grandparents prayed furiously any time one of us opened our mouths to say 'forces.' They couldn't feel a thing. But every one of their children was at least a little sensitive. Why, you should have seen your great-grandma when I told her Shannon was haunted by her fiancé. She dragged us down to church so fast, you woulda thought I had said Satan himself had picked her for a bride."

"Don't be so melodramatic," Aunt Agatha says. "A few Our Fathers never hurt no one, and the way your mouth rattles off those swearwords, you probably deserved to say some anyway.

After much wheedling, Jo had acknowledged that the doctor probably recognised her from the infirmary. Kenneth felt sure that there was more to the story, but prying into her medical history was crossing a line even between the two of them, so he buried his curiosity as best he could.

“Thank you, Dr Edwards,” Jo replied silkily. “I see you have made time for the barber and changed out of those same rumpled clothes you arrived in. Are we to presume that you have grown tired of being mistaken for a vagabond?”

The doctor pressed his thin lips so tightly that they almost vanished altogether. The top of his head may be tidier, but his square jaw sprouted a decided shadow and the buttons on his waistcoat were misaligned. As though he had dressed and set out in a great hurry.

"You never ask anyone to be more than they are, but when they try to be, you never question it. That unending faith and optimism. How do you do it?"

I can't PRY my eyes away from his. I don't want to. "It's easy. You just believe everyone's doing their best."

"Teach me," he murmurs. He raises my face to his and kisses me. The chill of his lips battles the fever that rushes from my heart and across my skin. My book falls to the floor, forgotten as he grabs a hold of my waist and lifts me onto the table, so our faces are even. I place my hand against his chest, maybe to push him back, but it settles there like it belongs. I've wanted this for so long, and he is everything I imagined--hot and cold, firm yet gentle--and I take it all in, take him in, as each icy breath he exhales plays along my tongue and I inhale in Jack, Jack, my Jack. Every thought crystalizes around this moment, until he's all I can sense. It's not until my lips have grown numb that he finally pulls back, leaving me swaying on the edge of the table.

"You're the best, teach," he says, breathing heavily and dripping with sweat like he ran a race. His lips are too red, like maybe I burned them, and I can't help but stare at them, waiting for them to return to mine, but he leaves me there, engulfed in pine and wintergreen and longing.
