from the large room they occupied and placed them in Rush's, to make room for a larger family in the sector. With another bed placed between Rush's bed and
Drisal's, there was still room for the Keledraths and their clothing and shoes once the BOXes of scrolls had been lifted off the floor and stacked on the desk.
Cerel, having finished showing Thanilas around, was trying to wipe an ink smudge off his hand when Drisal burst in, demanding an explanation.

"We're solving a space problem for Lyn,"
Cerel said. "Since Rush isn't using his room."

"That's an assumption. It isn't true! He—“

Cerel grimaced. "Stop blustering. Not in front

“Fair enough,” I say as we drive into the small collection of buildings some might hesitate to call a town. Irena takes a few turns at what I assume are the only real intersections in this place— it doesn’t even seem to have any traffic lights— until we reach a building with a sign on the wall saying “Joseph’s Parcel Service”. A man is leaning on the wall just under said sign, but he stands up and walks into the open garage door next to him the moment we enter his field of view. Irena pulls into the small parking lit in front of this door, and the man comes strolling out pulling a dolly with a large box on it before the engine even fully dies. I now see that he has short cut brown hair with grey streaks around the temples and blue eyes surrounded by wrinkles. He’s probably around fifty, if I have to guess.
Irena steps out and flashes the man a big smile before speaking. “Joe! You always see me coming, don’t you?”
“Kinda hard to not spot you in that, miss,” Joe replies with a smile as he comes to a stop right behind Seahorse. Irena opens the tailgate for him, and I’m assuming this box is what we came here for, the Journals she talked about.

He’d barely begun to wrangle his breathing when the doorknob jiggled.
“Hold up,” Owen called through the door. “It’s locked—”
The knob wrenched, the lock crumbling into so much loose hardware, and in walked the fey Owen had hit with his car.
“Oooohhhhh fffuck,” Owen said, knees giving out.
“Where is it?” said Wesley. He was almost unrecognizable in his fresh clothes and not one leaf in his hair, even with the fine line of stitches closing the gash in his cheek. But his eyes were the same: that unblinking, predatory grey. Owen swallowed, his already frayed nerves further unraveling as his eyes sought something in the cluttered storage room with which to defend himself. But if a direct hit from a vehicle travelling at forty-five miles an hour wasn’t enough to put a dent in Wesley, he wasn’t sure how much luck he’d have with a stapler or a box of pens.
“Where’s what?” Owen said,

“Good, we will walk through the day to reach the gates of the underworld by nightfall.”

Sounded like a great time to reach the underworld, and Isyra rolled her eyes.

“I brought you something to keep you busy while we walk.” Korrin handed her a stone cube. She took it and looked up at him.

“Use your mind,” Korrin said. “To unlock the box.”

“You’re kidding?” Isyra said.

“I’m not,” Korrin said. “Have fun.”

She thought of throwing it at him as he walked off ahead of her. No further instruction than just, “Unlock it with your mind,” Isyra said, mimicking Korrin’s deep voice, and then scoffed.

Excerpt from SmokeWIP, a sage owen romance novel WIP. Text as follows:

Fuck, he'd overdone it. He'd timed it perfectly-the pills he'd taken before leaving the house were kicking in just as he hit the Macon Ranch driveway-but must've fucked up the dosage because crossing from a sleek timber green Ford toward the main farmhouse was another version of Billy. Tall, lean muscle, like Billy halfway between high school and grown. Shaggy hair two shades blonder, like he lived in the sun. A t-shirt with the sleeves cut off and cropped to his belt, and boot cut jeans, and wire-rimmed boxy sunglasses like he'd just stepped out of a 70s cigarette ad.
He shifted the Bronco into park beside Billy's precious Sierra, leaned back, and closed his eyes. Counted to five. Opened them. The vision was gone, and he breathed easier. He checked his pockets for everything he'd need to survive the night, and went to play happy.
Billy greeted him with enthusiasm he didn't deserve, an arm around his shoulder to steer him around and introduce him to the parts of his life Matthew had jealously avoided. Dance hall friends, a couple rodeo and ranch acquaintances, then-"This is one of my cousins, from Montana."

Darkness receded, and in the distance, Ashrah spotted the ruins of a long-forgotten building floating above more and more heaps of detritus. As they stepped out of Luzvyr and into Ryllul, a furious moan echoed behind them.

Sam ran his thumb over the embossing, feeling the arch of Witch Queen Agatha’s prominent nose and the ripples of her elaborately curled hair. The coin felt heavy between Sam’s thick fingers. Substantial. He turned it over, angling the markings so that sunlight glinted off the pair of bubbling cauldrons stamped on the back.

“How many do you count?” Hazel’s voice echoed from the stairwell.

“Same as you. Forty-seven double cauldrons,” Sam answered, tucking the coin back into the box. “To think your grandparents had all this hidden in their chimney.” It was more than a year’s profits for a skilled tradesman like Sam and a fortune for someone like the Cahills, scrimping by on odd jobs and meager salaries. Enough to keep Hazel’s grandparents comfortable in their retirement, if they had lived to see it.

Wood squeaked as Hazel descended the last step and turned towards the kitchen. Her hands were caught in her hair, copper hair pins flashing in the morning light as she fixed her braid into a crown.

“Well, that’s the thatching and the carpentry sorted with coin to spare for stocking the shop.” Hazel slid the last pin in place and gave the intricate chestnut plait a final pat. “How do I look?”

Like an angel waiting to pluck my soul out of the River.

A brown bodice embroidered with dancing foxes hoisted Hazel’s moderate assets into place over a blue blouse that matched the summer-sky color of her eyes. Sturdy split skirts spilled over her broad hips, curving as if they’d been sculpted by the Goddess herself for Sam’s hands to hold. How dare those Wardens from Miss Edie’s pub call Hazel horse-faced? Her nose was on the bold side, true, but to Sam’s eye it just made her beauty distinct.

“Sam,” Hazel prompted him, hands perched on those distracting hips. He had been quiet too long, even for her.

“You look…” Sam searched for a word appropriate to the situation. “Respectable. I wouldn’t hesitate to approve your application.”

I would be happy to haul whatever boxes she needs, load up whatever furniture needs to go wherever it needs to go, but mostly I just want to be there for her. I wonder if this is a time when I should push a little more, but I offered a few times already, and I don’t want to intrude on her time with her sister.

“Looking for these?”
His pants hit him in the face before he could see anyone, but he didn’t need to anyway. “What are you doing here, Fox?” He ducked under the blanket to dress.
“You seemed so comfortable, thought I’d join you.”
He tossed off the tablecloth and looked up. Fox was sitting cross-legged on a stack of boxes.
“How long have you been here?” he asked.
She shrugged. “A couple of hours. Hard to say.”
“Why?”
“It’s peaceful. No one around but you, and you weren’t in a talkative mood. I needed some time to think.”
“That explains so little.”
“I was looking for you. You weren’t with the proprietor of the establishment. Figured you were still here. I decided to wait.”
“Ok, that makes…more sense,” he decided to let her answer at her own pace. “How are you feeling?”
He stared at her expectantly. She needed to talk to him about something, but she obviously wasn’t keen on spitting it out.

Then my eyes unexpectedly focused on a deer, semi-hidden by tree trunks and leafy, low-growing plants. It was a young doe, its black eyes looking back at me, its black-rimmed ears up and alert. I must have been looking in that direction for several minutes and had not seen it, so effective was the deer’s brown and white coat at concealment. Or perhaps the deer had only just walked into my sightline, but had been so stealthy that I hadn’t heard or seen its approach. In any case, the deer appeared to materialize in the leafshadows as if from magic, without sound or movement.
After a few minutes, the deer, having decided that I was not a threat, began to walk away, its thin legs picking their way through the undergrowth. I watched it go, its white tail held up like a flag of truce. I longed for my camera. But I fixed my mind upon the retreating animal so that the image would remain in my memory.
When it was gone, I felt a little thrill of exhilaration. I laughed out loud and slapped a knee. I felt alive, and glad to be so. Perhaps this is what Mr. Muir had meant. What a beautiful place God had made.

I THRILL some nurses and doctors by making an appearance at the hospital to set my foot and get crutches. The nightshift probably doesn't get many celebrities. I assume. I don't know, maybe they do.

Anyway, they give me crutches and fix my ankle, sort of. I tell them I broke it doing a stunt, and they forget for a minute that I'm a
model, not an actor, and totally buy the story. Whatever. I take a cab to my hotel.

I'm all anxious about tomorrow, and I feel like I should be planning, even though don't know what else could do. And my body is ready to shut down. So I drop my crutches by the side of the bed and fall into it.

Ohhhh, my bed is way better than Evie's. I spread my arms out along the bedspread, knowing I'm getting them dirty, but that's what
housekeeping is for. I tuck them under my super-fluffy pillows and let myself fall into a dream of treating Evie to this bed.
