Upon his arrival in Seattle, an obsequious Japanese cart driver takes #FrankMatsura to a hotel. In an early draft, Shishido was a villain. Here, he's just a streetwise operator, a bit of a hustler. #WIPsnips #carrier

“If I may ask, Matsu’ura-sama”—again, that respectful suffix—“what brings a man like yourself to America?”
“Frank,” I said in English, “call me Frank.” Shishido asked a lot of questions for a cart driver. I didn’t want to tell my story to every stranger, so I improvised. “Gold. I came to find gold in the mountains.”
Shishido looked me over, and at the way I was dressed, then back at my heavy trunk. He had easily seen through my lie. “As a lark, an amusement,” I added feebly.
“Gold owari, all gone,” Shishido responded in pidgin English, dismissing my claim with a curt gesture of his hand. “No find gold now. Plenty danger in mountains, ne? Dorobo,”—highwaymen—“waiting for gold miners, no matter what kine, Chinee, Japanee, hakujin, kokujin,”—white people, black people—”no matter. Take money, maybe kill. Too mucha danger.”
“Thank you,” I said, “for your advice.”
A silence fell between us as the cart bumped and lurched over the road.
When the cart drew up to the Cooke Hotel, he brought my trunk into the lobby and I paid for the transport. My money in his pocket, Shishido and I shook hands in the American fashion. Before departing, however, Shishido gave me a sly smile and left me with a last bit of counsel: “Plenty gold in city. Come every day on boat.” I considered the profit he had just made for carrying me less than a mile, and agreed that he had found his gold mine right there on the docks.

I circled towards the main desk. Smiling employee Annette was helping a harried looking woman with a pet carrier in her hands.
“You told me you allowed pets!” the guest shrieked, borderline hysterical. “You can’t turn Marvin away!”
“Yes, ma’am.” Annette’s smile never wavered. “We do allow cats and small dogs. Ball pythons, however, may make our other guests uncomfortable. If you read the relevant section of our website…”
I chuckled to myself as I walked back out of earshot. The hotel business must get very interesting. Not that my job was boring.
I completed my circuit and arrived back at my seat just in time to see a woman in a yellow sundress enter. She was young, pretty, more nervous than Greta had been. She clutched her bag to her chest and scanned the hotel anxiously. It didn’t look like she did this kind of thing often.
She certainly didn’t look like a hardened killer. But appearances didn’t mean anything, so I took a moment to study her. Then, I grabbed my things and headed for the door, brushing past her on the way out.

The last thing he needed was Tigerlily to be concerned for him, especially with the war. Why should anyone be worried about him? “It’s fine, Michael. I can handle myself.” He mumbled as he began walking back to camp.

The azahnu removed its fingers, and Ashrah fell to her knees. Another humiliation. Datusha floated beside the azahnu’s head; she tried to command the sword so it would slice the demon’s head off, to no avail. “A Torch Bearer who no longer answers to the Eternal Flame. A carrier who defied the creator and still lives. You are a peculiar specimen, elbhyr.”

Through the pain clouding her mind, she threw a punch—

Her fist hovered a sword tip away from the azahnu’s leathery stomach, a psychic field keeping her arm away with such force she worried it would crush her bones.

With a flick of its wrist, the azahnu shoved her. Weakened, Ashrah tumbled through the sand, stopping at the taloned feet of the Nether-Touched. The enemy’s odious face swam into view, and in that moment, Ashrah wanted nothing but to rip those fangs out and use them to carve the grin off her mouth.

"Thank you so much, Kiseki. It's fine. Here," Masuyo began simply, and moved closer, lightly hugging her arms around Kyoka in the carrier.
Kiseki nearly yelped, easing back a step. "N-no, please! I make babies very upset. I don't want to scare her!"
Masuyo did pause, but kept her smile. "Babies cry, Kiseki. It's okay. You wanted to see her, didn't you?"
Kiseki was caught, and Masuyo could see the darkness writhing tighter down her shoulders and spine. Her fear was feeding it, and the wretched thing was probably giving her terrible thoughts of awful outcomes.
Even so, the horror was an old friend of Kiseki's at this point in her life. A little glimmer of warmth gave her that spark of hope. Her trembling hand reached out. "C-could I just pet her hair? It looks so smooth and soft."
Masuyo nodded, and came close enough for the reach to be comfortable, angling her body so Kyoka could see Kiseki easily as well. She was deeply relieved that Kyoka, indeed, had no great fear of the darkness around Kiseki. Instead, she focused straight into Kiseki's eyes with that almost alien patience and intent.
Kiseki was paused by the gentle stare, but not out of shyness. It was the first time a baby hadn't burst into tears at the sight of her. Her eyes watered, and she tenderly brushed her fingers over Kyoka's hair.
"Oh," Kiseki gasped softly, tears dripping down her cheeks. "She's so soft and warm... Your daughter is beautiful, Masuyo."
Masuyo glowed happily. "She really is. Thank you, Kiseki."

“I have a letter for you.” Without waiting for me to respond, the man reached into his pocket and pulled out an envelope, holding it out to me. I recognized the handwriting immediately. It was the most beautiful calligraphy, elegant and practiced, a talent I’d commented on many times before. And today it said my name. The clearly expensive envelope was embossed with gold flowers around the edges, while my name was written boldly and with great care. By the way the messenger held it, I could tell the wax seal was in place and I could only assume the seal held the same insignia as the one on this man’s chest.

A brave, confident woman would have taken the letter immediately and been on her way but I wavered for the briefest of moments. It felt like the envelope was a serpent ready to strike the moment I got closer. Yet, I also knew that by refusing the letter, I would be making a bad situation worse, and for the sake of my future, I knew I had to end it now before it was too late.

#SumLuv I've been reading fanfic for nearly my whole life, and most of the ones I read were very shippy. I never read just straight up romance books (but fantasy with romance, yes) until I got to college, and I believe the first contemporary romance I read was Red, White, and Royal Blue.

Newly arrived in the duchy, the soon-to-be duke has taken a wander around the outdoor market and come away with some unintended purchases.

When he got to the Boot & Garter, John found that a crowd had gathered outside, eager to get a glimpse of the new duke. Everyone, it seemed, wanted to shake his hand or pat him on the back. He’d not experienced anything like this before and wasn’t comfortable with it. Protesting about “Your Grace” and “Sir” was getting him nowhere, and he’d begun to resign himself to this being how it was going to be in the duchy from now on.
“Thank you. Thank you so much, you’re very kind. Thank you for your warm reception. Thank you.”
He shook the hands offered to him while making for the entrance. This wasn’t easy as he was still carrying a salami, a bag of carrots, a model yacht, three maps of the duchy and a newspaper, all without a carrier bag. When he got inside, he found it even more crowded than outside. He pushed his way to the bar.

Good morning #WIPSnips! 💙 I swapped carrier for container this morning which gives us this little scene full of trust and sleepy energy.

“Backpack?” they asked softly.

He handed them their little tactical backpack, covered in pins and patches. He smiled reverently at their trust in letting him touch their comfort object.

They opened the center pocket and rattled out a container of pills labeled High dose THC and shook two out into their hand. He handed over a bottle of water from the minifridge and they downed the pills.

Amon leaned closer, feeling the intense heat of the heating pad pressing against his side.

“Better?” he asked genuinely

“Will be soon. The pills take a minute to kick in but the heating pad will do its work quickly.” Lunaris said, already softening back into sleepiness. He pulled them close and covered them both with the hotel comforter. “Rest. I will watch over you.” and Lunaris listened, falling back asleep quickly as the heating pad warmed their aching back.

“Like me and Stieglitz. I wanted to make pictures that looked like his.”
“Until you realized that you have a gift for portraits. When you look at people, you see them, not like most people. For most of us, we see the outside, the role, the label. ‘This person goes in this box. This other person goes in that one.’ You don’t see people like that. Your photographs capture people’s souls.”
I smiled at this, remembering how superstitious people said the same thing but in a literal sense.
“Like that studio photograph of Charley Leo. He looks like an emperor. You captured his dignity, his seriousness, his strength of character. In your portrait, Charley Leo looks like a man to be taken seriously. Do you think the people here see that when they look at him? To them, he’s just that Indian rancher. Do you know what I heard a keto rancher say about him down at the clinic? He called him an ‘uppity Injun.’ Doesn’t that mean namaiki?” She mimed a haughty person with her chin up, looking like a proud peacock.
I nodded, smiling at this performance.
“No keto, including Bill, or even William,” she continued, “would ever invite Charley to their dinner table. They might not say it, but they think they’re better than him. But they invite you. You charmed your way in. And now, your photograph can reveal to them what they have not seen.”

His pants would be around here somewhere. Probably something to take the edge off this hangover, too. That cheerful thought in mind, he pushed himself upright.
“Looking for these?”
His pants hit him in the face before he could see anyone, but he didn’t need to anyway. “What are you doing here, Fox?” He ducked under the blanket to dress.
“You seemed so comfortable, thought I’d join you.”
He tossed off the tablecloth and looked up. Fox was sitting cross-legged on a stack of boxes.
“How long have you been here?” he asked.
She shrugged. “A couple of hours. Hard to say.”
“Why?”
“It’s peaceful. No one around but you, and you weren’t in a talkative mood. I needed some time to think.”
“That explains so little.”
“I was looking for you. You weren’t with the proprietor of the establishment. Figured you were still here. I decided to wait.”
“Ok, that makes…more sense,” he decided to let her answer at her own pace. “How are you feeling?”
He stared at her expectantly. She needed to talk to him about something, but she obviously wasn’t keen on spitting it out.

“Good, we will walk through the day to reach the gates of the underworld by nightfall.”

Sounded like a great time to reach the underworld, and Isyra rolled her eyes.

“I brought you something to keep you busy while we walk.” Korrin handed her a stone cube. She took it and looked up at him.

“Use your mind,” Korrin said. “To unlock the box.”

“You’re kidding?” Isyra said.

“I’m not,” Korrin said. “Have fun.”

She thought of throwing it at him as he walked off ahead of her. No further instruction than just, “Unlock it with your mind,” Isyra said, mimicking Korrin’s deep voice, and then scoffed.

Drisal's, there was still room for the Keledraths and their clothing and shoes once the BOXes of scrolls had been lifted off the floor and stacked on the desk.
Cerel, having finished showing Thanilas around, was trying to wipe an ink smudge off his hand when Drisal burst in, demanding an explanation.

"We're solving a space problem for Lyn,"
Cerel said. "Since Rush isn't using his room."

"That's an assumption. It isn't true! He—“

Cerel grimaced. "Stop blustering. Not in front
of Than." Thanilas smiled shyly, lifting a hand, and Cerel shoved Drisal out the door. "Now what's wrong?

"Hey, I thought you were a pilot?" Armin shouted over the comm unit.

"I am," Calida retorted. "I pilot fighters. Not this nerf."

"Watch it," Armin warned. "Just focus on keeping us in one piece."

"Are you planning on shooting anything anytime today?"

Armin ignored the jibe, training the laser turret on one of the pirate snubfighters. The unwieldy-looking ship centered in Armin's targeting bracket. The box lit up in a green color, and Armin pulled the trigger. Verdant energy poured into the smaller fighter, which ignited in a flash of flame. "Like that one?" he asked as the fireball dissipated.

"Yeah, one's great, but don't get cocky," Calida responded. "You've still got at least 3 out there."

"Fine. You point, I'll shoot," Armin answered.

Slowly, she got to her feet and made a circle around the boxes, searching for perhaps the tenth time for some sort of signal, but they were just plain brown crates, something that fruit might be shipped in. She leaned forward, placing her hands on one of the boxes as she sniffed the air. No smell. She tapped the side of the box and got nothing, then shook it a little and thought she heard something like the tinkling of glass, which brought her back to thinking it might be moonshine or some other alcohol stored in jars and bottles. But would they be this shady about sending alcohol to the troops?

Another thought that occurred to her was body parts. That wasn't something she was seriously going to entertain; there was nothing about the transport signaling it to be true. For one, she thought that the crates and the ship would have to be kept cool to store bodies correctly, and Fontaine had not mentioned anything about temperature control. And if there were body parts, being in the warm cargo hold so close to the engine would have surely caused a stench.

“I only went once,” the doctor replied stiltedly. It was not a happy memory.

“What happened?”

“It’s a depressing story. You won’t like it.”

“Why not?” asked the vampire tentatively. “Did someone… hurt you?”

“Nothing like that.”

Dr Edwards scowled. He had vowed never to share anything personal again, least of all with Kenneth Dolpuc.

“I’m going to need a stronger drink if we’re opening this particular box of leeches,” he said reluctantly.

Danny and I down some water bottles--I'm a fan of Crystal Geyser, not so much of Fiji water--and pack the rest into the BOX the grocery store gave us to carry them all. I transform into a muscle-bound, weight-lifting champion version of myself and haul the BOX out of the apartment.

"Well, now I feel like a wimp," he says.

"Feel free to take an end."

"No, no, I wouldn't want to infringe on a woman's right to carry a heavy BOX."
