It’s that time of year again when my work offers me the privilege of parking on campus for only $600 a year… in suburban Texas… a state notorious for its lack of land and available surface lots.
I guess it's a super hot take to think that there is nothing wrong with using chatGPT for search or to do a sanity check over a paper to make sure it's word accurate... That's literally what an LLM is good at... it's even got "language" in the name fer fucksakes.
For people concerned about source=chatgpt.com in any articles appearing in any magazines lately
Absolutely WTF, just searched for a book which had a chapter from me in Google and it came up *in Google* with the tracking "utm_source=chatgpt.com" in the link. (Probably needless to say, but I wasn't using ChatGPT.)
It’s worth noting that Taco Bell identified the source before the FDA did, and promptly pulled it from their stores. The FDA didn’t even name the source until Taylor Farms outed themselves, and hasn’t issued a recall. Basically, Taco Bell is now a more reliable authority than the FDA.
Taylor Farms, which supplies major fast food and grocery chains, was identified as the possible source of the cyclosporiasis outbreak Thursday.
Korea added ANOTHER 7 years to President Yoon's sentence this week. He's already in for life but there's constantly new trials to set precedent for every single thing he did wrong to be worthy of punishment. Elsewhere, political standards are so lax no one can even check if a dude's dead or not.
Saving this for some science later

I absolutely hate how ChemTwitter ended up on LinkedIn. At least with Twitter, there was occasionally something cool to see. LinkedIn is constant contemplative navel-gazing or humblebrags. That stupidity needs to be punctuated with something else, like arguing if tacos are in the hotdog family

Doing a linear stretch on these images shows how dramatic the "edits" were, revealing the deception in clear terms. This should be a complete scandal for Thermo Fisher and more people in the biosciences should be talking about it.
The Thermo Fisher situation keeps getting worse. We've now collected 450+ problematic images presented as verification data in TF's antibody catalog. This includes: 🖌️ Dozens more images with duplications or painting 🖨️ Hundreds of blots that all share the same background (behold slideshow below)

I put this on my CV three years ago, thinking I was funny, and I guess I forgot to remove it. I don't know how many people I've sent my CV to for talks, jobs, etc., but no one has pointed it out… hm. Makes you wonder if the service section of your CV is even read...
They came for the lowly professors and I said nothing, for I was not a lowly professor, I was a famous national academy member…
This would be a disaster. It also shows that trying to remain above the political fray, as NASEM leadership has mostly done, is generally not workable — in the end, they’ll come for you if they don’t like what you represent, and probably sooner than later
I wonder if thermofisher knows they can use AI for this now, no need to photoshop
Earlier this week I posted an example of a fake western blot provided by ThermoFisher to demonstrate the validity of a p53 antibody. I considered it an amusing curiosity. In fact Thermo Fisher Scientific has systematically manipulated antibody validation data!
