A new episode of The Publishing Rodeo is out, and it feels like a tiny bit of light has returned to the world.
Social media is beset by a tidal wave of publishing misinformation, fuelled by bots and platform-farming and algorithms that favour outrage. With special guest Donyae Coles, Sunyi and Scott discus how on earth we can walk the line between being honest, while not fueling an atmosphere of misery.
Esquire couldn’t book this actor for an interview so fed previous responses through a couple of thief machines and ‘interviewed’ a digital photocopy. Including asking personal questions about his dad. People need to be sued and then fired for this.

It was this for me. By the time I left Twitter I'd begun to tense up just visiting it, and I was burned out by being condescending to the folks trying to be nasty to me. When I came here, I fully signed onto the "don't engage, just block" ethos and tried to model a better online version of myself.
I don’t know what it is, but there’s definitely a “let’s be better to each other” vibe that most longer-term BlueSky posters attempt to embody. If I had to guess, I’d say it is a repudiation of the nastiness that Twitter seemed to embrace.
I genuinely do not care how large or small this website is or gets. I just care that people I like are here& a lot of you are the kind of weird gremlins I enjoy or at least can tolerate. And so far you’re mostly tolerating me, so thanks. My takes are in fact the hottest ones so you have good taste 🔥
What a writer thinks ISN’T political is always a huge tell. Even something as straightforwardly man vs nature as To Build A Fire is about toxic masculinity—“Any man who was a man could travel alone.”
All stories are political. Yes, even - indeed *especially* - the ones that go out of their way to try and avoid being political.
Science fiction, the genre which famously has nothing to say about social issues, the human condition, or much of anything at all.
Arguably the biggest sci fi author of our time:
As I was drafting (another) post about LLM use in literature, this news story popped into my feed. Paywalled but the tl;dr is a freelance book reviewer used LLMs to write a NYT review and the LLMs plagiarized from a Guardian review. Oop www.thewrap.com/media-platfo...

I didn't have much of an opinion about Andy Weir before this week, beyond knowing I wanted to read his books at some point, but I sure have seen enough in the past few days to have a not-great opinion now.

This image was posted by the official Project Hail Mary account on Facebook, and all I have to say is that their marketing people deserve a raise. Now I want the movie tie-in version of the novel to feature this as the cover.
This is the take. When I saw the Nvidia AI filter, my first thought was "those devs made games like RE9 look the way they do on purpose..."
This is so disrespectful to the intentional art direction of devs. If devs wanted to lean in to hyper realism they would. This also drastically changes key aspects of visuals like character features, focal points, lighting and so on. What a terrible invention. Nvidia should shelve this one 😭
The number one website currently cited in Google’s AI search mode? It’s Google. The second? That’s YouTube, which is also owned by Google. Google’s using circular hyperlinks in AI Mode to keep users locked into their platforms. My latest for @wired.com: www.wired.com/story/google...
Google's AI Searches Love to Refer You Back to Google
The company's generative AI search tools increasingly cite its own services, like Google Search and YouTube, over third-party publishers.
