Fellow academics: I know a Haitian PhD student who due to TPS termination needs another institutional affiliation not in the USA. Do you or someone you know have an avenue for them? If so, DM me.
It makes me so sad to think of Neko Case having to carry this, alongside way too many others.
IN WHAT FUCKING UNIVERSE?
This last week I was just cookin’ along minding my business when I suddenly found myself quite depressed.

Millions of people rely on anonymous access to lawful online speech. This week, the Senate is looking at four bills that could vastly expand age verification and make anonymous internet use much harder. www.acteff.org/campaign/16...

Virginia health officials announced the state’s first documented case of locally acquired dengue, saying a resident who had not traveled outside Virginia was probably infected after being bitten by a mosquito that had previously bit an infected traveler.

More cops have been arrested for using flock cameras to stalk women than there are transgender athletes in youth sports.

One in three VA-08 voters ready for a change 👀
Tonight every contested Democratic primary in Virginia produced a majority winner. Luria 80.6. Perriello 78.7. Beyer 67. Taylor 52.7. Powers 50.7. Virginia Dems are locked in and ready to win in November. Let’s go flip this house.
For context: the world’s largest parking garage holds 20,000 cars. The largest garage in the U.S. is at SeaTac airport, and holds 12,000 cars.
One part of Trump's $22 billion makeover of Dulles that's been missed is his big, beautiful, world-record 32,000-spot parking garage. That's *way* more parking than recent estimates show the airport needs, and it would tower over the historic terminal: www.notus.org/metro/dulles...
It's National Night Out (my block has a cop-free version) and my microneighborhood is experiencing a sustained rash of petty property crimes (car window smashing, porch thefts, etc.). Does anyone have advice about talking to white liberal neighbors about police-free ways of addressing this stuff?
this is about gene wolfe and I am hijacking it to suggest sharing your own favourite texts that are so thick, so viscous
it is just such a pleasure to read a text so thick, so viscous
Underneath solar panels, plants grew much more and used less water, "Chiltepin pepper plants produced three times as much fruit as those grown in full sun. Jalapenos matched their usual harvest while using 65 percent less water. Tomatoes grown under the array came in at twice the normal yield."
*American farmers slid solar panels over 62,000 acres of farmland, and the biggest payoff had almost nothing to do with electricity* #Erneuerbare #Renewable #Solar #Photovoltaik energiesmedia.com/solar-panels…
They think they're being clever eugenicists by saying that people with "underlying health issues" don't matter, but >75% of U.S. adults have a chronic condition (including 60% of age 18–34). So what they're really saying is "nobody matters, it's okay if everybody dies from inadequate regulation."
Breaking News: Two deaths in Michigan have been linked to cyclospora. Both people who had the parasite also had underlying health issues.
DoorDash claims to support DC’s autonomy… while actively undermining it. If you’ve already deleted your account and the app from your phone, then I hope you’ll join Free DC on August 7 and call on DoorDash to withdraw support from H.R. 9720. Oppose federal attacks on the people of DC.

This WSJ editorial unwittingly makes my point about the danger of Bernie's plan to turn all Americans into AI investors: "give public workers a direct stake in the success of AI and other companies. Maybe then government unions wouldn’t be as hostile to private business." www.wsj.com/opinion/publ...

Autopsies of Black Lives Matter and George Floyd protests often conclude that movements produced tough-on-crime backlash. My new study in Work and Occupations finds a different kind of movement outcome: BLM changed how local reporters cover cops and jails. 🧵 journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...
New: We found 50 cops who misused Flock cameras and other license-plate readers for personal purposes, often to spy on their girlfriends or ex-wives. He "watched every single move I made. ... Who do you turn the chief of police in to?" wapo.st/3S6rTuo
She left her ex. He secretly tracked her through a network of policing cameras.
Flock’s array of license-plate cameras was built to fight crime. But at least 50 law enforcement officers were charged with or accused of misusing it and other systems.

most of us were, at best, temporarily quarantined. some of us still are because too many people didn't want to be inconvenienced any longer
frankie’s note here is extremely good: the labor story is inextricable (always, but ESPECIALLY in the us agricultural system)
I am making it a habit to always look for the labor story behind these nasty scandals. The consumers are almost never the only ones being harmed.

I like this notetaking example. it is a good case of how gender works. Notetaking has never been about producing a transcript. It is a bureaucratic skill in the 20th c. organixarion because it is SENSEMAKING. Those women socialized to take notes? They have been doing men’s metacognition for them
Notetaking in meetings is tiny case in point - used to be some predictable social assumptions who would do it; now anyone can offer to do ”notetaking” by turning on the AI listener. Further interesting scenario is human recollection / notes (taken by habit by a person) conflict with AI summary
