This plane landed in Myanmar about three hours ago. This is the third ICE flight to Myanmar this year. Burmese deportees in 2025 were immediately sent to a torture facility next to the airport, according to Myanmar Now. Weeks later, not all of them had emerged.

That web of trust is in those little building blocks and with stories figuring out what it is the cops could even do to meet the need or repair the violation, or game out the plan for the worst fears.
I know collectively as neighbors, we can do that better than the police and everyone will feel better for it, and I feel like people don’t have a hard time believing that.
I'm just gonna say: it somewhat baffles me that people who are understandably skeptical of opaque LLMs as legitimate sources of information will suddenly go full on "the computer KNOWS" when they are using opaque tools to "detect" AI. The computer does not know.

Biked 1 mile to coffee. Then biked another mile to the pharmacy. Then biked 1 mile home. 95% on protected (separated) bike infra. More Americans deserve the freedom of a life like this (if they want it).
This would be a moment where I would bring up that a lot of crime is perpetrated by young men (16-25) whose brains aren’t fully developed. This is when I’d reminisce about the high school boys I knew did similar things.

Harder when it's proven to be (likely housed) youth, but they're experiencing hardships like others have mentioned here, & feel powerless/ like there's little for them, etc —in addition to systemic oppression they experience, etc. Coaxing sympathy, I guess, is the tactic through line.
Recently saw a vid of a formerly unhoused person re: being given items/food instead of money when "panhandling" & because it's so unreliable & humiliating & takes so much effort for little payoff, many quickly resort to stealing &/ reselling for a more certain amount. When you have nothing... 🤷🏻♀️
A neighbor & I were talking about something similar yesterday, & he really likes the take, "these folks are just trying to get through their day." Pointing out barriers folks experience that most of us don't consider, the snowballing impacts of little things, etc.

while i like my comfortable life and don't feel its excessive, i am not interested in enforcing it with violence when i have to actually look that in the face, you know? might be a helpful angle for talking to neighbors.
this is not a way to deal with the problem when it happens, and i know personally that these things can feel pretty invasive and upsetting, but i do find it helpful to remember that the root problem of all of these is that some of us have a lot while others have almost nothing.
along these lines, someone in Detroit started a "green chairs not green lights" (referencing our facial recognition surveillance dragnet), encouraging folks to just sit on their porches and hang out more.

Hanging out on porches with a morning coffee or evening nightcap, going for walks where you seem engaged and alert, being seen visiting with/talking to neighbors all makes it look like a less inviting space to attempt something. A block where you never see anyone is the real inciting problem.
I’ve started thinking about this akin to improving transit conditions, i.e. that the only real fix for “anti-social” behavior is an influx of “social” behavior. Cameras and cops don’t really inhibit this kind of petty stuff, and they won’t rewind it. What will help is making the street seem busy.
It's National Night Out (my block has a cop-free version) and my microneighborhood is experiencing a sustained rash of petty property crimes (car window smashing, porch thefts, etc.). Does anyone have advice about talking to white liberal neighbors about police-free ways of addressing this stuff?
